Dr. Bissen-Miyajima will be the next APACRS President. T he APACRS meeting official- ly kicked off in Chiang Mai on Friday morning with its opening ceremony. The session featured welcome addresses by Pannet Pang- puthipong, MD, Bangkok Thailand, the organizing chairman of the meeting, Prof. Emeritus Piyasa- kol Sakolsatayadorn, the Minister for Public Health of Thailand, and Ronald Yeoh, MD, Singapore, the APACRS president. Dr. Pangputhipong said that "ophthalmology in the Asia-Pacific region grows fast." He said he can still remember when he and others in the region traveled from country to country to perform live surgery and teach until they became friends and like family. "APACRS became our home away from home," he said. He added that this year, he is proud to host the meeting in Thai- land in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai. Prof. Sakolsatayadorn warm- ly welcomed attendees to this year's meeting. Cataracts remain an important global public health challenge, he said. In Thailand, cataracts still account for almost 70% of blindness, he added, and he T his year's APACRS LIM Lecture was presented by Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Rockville Centre, New York, U.S., on the topic of "Re- fractive Surgery Comes of Age: How Good is LASIK? The Myths, Miscon- ceptions, and Reality." Graham Barrett, MD, Perth, Australia, introduced the APACRS LIM Lecture, adding that this year's lecture is special, not only because of the stature of the lecturer, Dr. Donnenfeld, but also because of the opportunity to reflect on the con- tributions of the late Arthur S.M. Lim, MD, the founder of APACRS for whom the lecture is named. "This is the highest honor we have at APACRS," he said. Dr. Barrett also discussed Dr. Donnenfeld's contributions to the field of ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and the Asia-Pacific region. In spite of LASIK's long clinical and historical presence, misconcep- tions regarding the risks and benefits of this procedure persist, eroding both the reputation of the proce- dure and of those in the field that remain its unwavering supporters, Dr. Donnenfeld said. The aim of Liliana Werner, MD, PhD, with Alan Crandall, MD. Dr. Werner was the Grand Prize Winner at the APACRS Film Festival.
