Thursday Singapore 2013 ASCRS SYMPOSIUM, February 2011 SAN DIEGO 2011 EW DAILY NEWS 7 MasterClasses: Keeping current and cutting edge by Chiles Aedam R. Samaniego EyeWorld Asia-Pacific Senior Staff Writer T he APACRS MasterClasses have been a feature of the society's annual meeting since their debut at the 2010 meeting in Cairns, Australia. The classes were first conceived to provide attendees with education that is, quite simply, a step up from that provided by the average instructional course. "I wanted to create instruction courses at a higher level on more complex topics to be run by recognized experts in the field," said Ronald Yeoh, MD, organizing chairman, 26th APACRS Annual Meeting. "This also distinguishes them from the more basic instruction courses, which are also important but cover more basic topics." MasterClasses, he said, are further distinguished from these "basic instructional courses" by their breadth and, more importantly, topical nature: MasterClasses feature courses on the most current and cutting-edge topics. "The scientific committee together with the president of APACRS take a macro view of hot topics and current issues and suggest MasterClasses based on these," said Dr. Yeoh. The six MasterClasses taking place today on level 3, SUNTEC, cover femtosecond laser cataract surgery (MC01: "Femtophaco Cataract," 13:30 – 15:00hrs, Rm. 336); glued IOLs (MC02: "Glued IOL," 13:30 – 15:00hrs, Rm. 335); refractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx) procedures, from femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx) to the small incision variants small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and pseudo-SMILE (MC03: "From FLEx to SMILE," 13:30 – 15:00hrs, Rm. 334); IOL fixation techniques in the absence of capsular support (MC04: "Finer Points in IOL Fixa- "Glued IOLs and Advanced Biometry are brand new MasterClasses," he said. "FLEx and SMILE has evolved from ReLEx and SMILE while the Femtophaco course has evolved to be much more sophisticated than last year's version." Ronald Yeoh, M.D. tion," 15:30 – 17:00hrs, Rm. 336); IOL power calculations and biometry (MC05: "Advanced Biometry," 15:30 – 17:00hrs, Rm. 334); and the use of femtosecond lasers during LASIK flap creation (MC06: "Flawless Femto LASIK Flaps," 15:30 – 17:00hrs, Rm. 335). The faculty chosen for each of these MasterClasses reflects the high level of these courses. "We invite instructors who are the pioneers in their fields," said Dr. Yeoh. For instance, he said, Zoltan Nagy, MD, was the first femtophaco surgeon in the world, and will be part of the faculty for the Femtophaco Cataract MasterClass. Meanwhile, Amar Agarwal, MD, was a pioneer for glued IOLs, which will be featured in a new course this year. In the past, the MasterClasses have been well received; Dr. Yeoh described the courses held during the last APACRS meeting in Shanghai as "standing-room only." But the organizers of the MasterClasses have not been resting on their laurels, said Dr. Yeoh. Instead, he and his colleagues have worked hard to ensure that the courses evolve, responding to the latest developments in the fields of cataract and refractive surgery. In addition to a higher level of education and training, attendees of this afternoon's MasterClasses can therefore expect what they learn to be the most current and up-to-date.
