Dr. Krishna discusses advances in medication adherence.
I
nnovations in medication
adherence are slowly reaching
ophthalmology—and glauco-
ma—and may lead to better
patient compliance—a notori-
ous problem area in glaucoma, said
Rohit Krishna, MD, Kansas City,
Missouri, during ASCRS Glaucoma
Day. Twenty to 30% of medications
are never filled, and 50% of medica-
tions are not taken as prescribed, Dr.
Krishna said. Yet new innovations
within medication compliance may
boost adherence by up to 40%, he
said. There will be increasing use of
technology in the future to assist
with better compliance, he ex-
plained.
For example, smart sensors can
be used in pills; these pills come
with a microchip that is ingested
with the medication and enable
medical professionals to track if a
pill has actually been taken. An-
other approach used in some other
specialties is a pill box that lights
up and beeps when it is time to take
medication. These newer approach-
es can provide feedback to profes-
sionals or electronic medical record
systems to confirm if patients have
taken their medication. Dr. Krishna
thinks there is the potential to use
these same approaches even with
eye drops.

Medication compliance innovations
a hot topic at Glaucoma Day
Honored Guests with significant achievements
part of this year's annual meeting
P
aul Ernest, MD, Jackson,
Michigan, and Hiroko
Bissen-Miyajima, MD,
PhD, Tokyo, are the
Honored Guests at this
year's ASCRS•ASOA Symposium &
Congress. At today's ASCRS Open-
ing General Session, they will be
honored for their contributions to
ophthalmology.
Specializing in cataract surgery
and lifestyle lens implants, Dr.
Ernest was inspired to study med-
icine following his grandmother's
successful corneal transplant surgery.
After switching from the study of
engineering to medicine with a
focus in ophthalmology, Dr. Ernest
completed his doctorate and his
residency at Wayne State Univer-
sity School of Medicine in Detroit
and later founded TLC Michigan.
Recognized for his innovation and
dedication, Dr. Ernest has been
voted one of the top 100 doctors in
the country several times over. He
is board certified by the American
Board of Ophthalmology and a
member of ASCRS and several other
professional associations, including
the American Medical Association,
Paul Ernest, MD
Hiroko Bissen-Miyajima, MD
