The Essentials track indicates sessions that focus on fundamental and indispensable concepts for surgeons at all experience and skill levels. The track debuted at last year's ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting. Attendees of these sessions will discover innovative, groundbreaking techniques and pearls to bring back to their practice. Sessions from the Essentials track span several days of the meeting to accommodate varying schedules. Here is a sampling of sessions that are part of the Essentials track: • Retina Cataract Surgery Essentials (today, 1 to 2:30 p.m.) • Retinal Essentials: Everything You Need to Know about Intravitreal Injections (today, 1 to 2:30 p.m.) • Surgical Essentials: Getting You Out of Trouble in Cataract Surgery (tomorrow, 8 to 9:30 a.m.) • The Complete Guide to Management of Astigmatism: Everything You Need to Know to Optimize Cornea and Lens-based Options (tomorrow, 3 to 4:30 p.m.) • Crosslinking Essentials: When to, How to, What to Expect, and What to Avoid (Monday, 8 to 9:30 a.m.) • ASCRS TOPGUN 2019: Essential Pearls from the Best International Phaco Instructors (Monday, 3 to 5 p.m.) Get surgical essentials for take-home knowledge from field experts ing a systematic approach, and evaluating the success of training methods. Attendees were given practical techniques, tips, and sam- ples of forms to use in the clinic to improve their in-house staff training. Clinic managers, clinic training managers, and IJCAHPO-certified ophthalmic personnel served as the faculty for the Train the Train- er course: • Amy Jost, COMT • Stephanie Lykins, COMT • Christine McDonald, COE • Matthew Parker, PhD • Jacqueline Pullos, COMT • Craig Simms, COMT • Rhonda Ullom, COMT D esigned to accelerate technicians' achieve- ment of International Joint Commission on Allied Health Person- nel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) certifi- cation and help them advance in their profession, IJCAHPO and the Association of Techni- cal Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) conducted sessions for trainers, hands-on skill training, and IJCAHPO certification ex- amination prep yesterday. ASCRS and IJCAHPO conducted the first Biometry Learning Labs. Rhonda Waldron, COMT, and Craig Simms, COMT, lectured and provided hands-on training during two half-day workshops on A-scan biometry. They presented an intensive learning lab on A-scan ultrasound biometry techniques, instrumentation, IOL calculations, and measurements. ATPO presented three half- day COA/COT/COMT Certifica- tion Examination Review Sessions and a day-long Train the Trainer program. For the first time at the ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting, ATPO presented "Who Wants to be a Super Tech?" This lively event, based on the game "Fam- ily Feud," tested the technicians' knowledge on current ophthal- mology topics. Certified ophthalmic per- sonnel and leading experts in the profession presented ATPO's Cer- tification Examination Review Ses- sions. These sessions are designed as an examination prep course for technicians who are preparing to take the next step in their careers by advancing their knowledge and skills through IJCAHPO's certi- fication. An overview of content areas is presented to help the attendee prepare. The half-day sessions are a didactic classroom format with Q&A. ATPO also held its annual Train the Trainer program. In its fourth year at the ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting, six speakers shared their best practices and tips for training new hires. The session focused on the practical skills and real-life strategies needed to deliv- er effective, engaging training of new ophthalmic hires in the clinic.
