He received his medical degree from the Stan- ford University School of Medi- cine. He interned at the Colorado General Hospital, Denver. In 1931, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthal- mology. From 1930 to 1932, Dr. Thy- geson was assistant in ophthalmol- ogy at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He served as an assistant professor of ophthal- mology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine from 1933 to 1936 and was a professor of ophthalmology at Columbia Uni- versity, New York. He also served as the director of the Institute of Ophthalmology of Presbyterian Hospital, New York. After active duty in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, Dr. Thygeson became a colonel in the Medical Reserve, U.S. Army. From 1946 to 1948, he was the section chief in ophthalmology, Branch 12, Veterans Administration. In 1946, Dr. Thygeson be- came a lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of California Medical School. The Ophthalmology Hall of Fame ceremony will be held at today's ASCRS Opening General Session from 10 a.m. to noon in ballroom 20ABC. The Ophthalmology Hall of Fame was created by ASCRS in 1999 to honor pioneers such as these with an ongoing celebration of their distinguished careers and contributions. The 2019 inductees, Howard Gimbel, MD, and Phillips Thygeson, MD (1903–2002), have helped shape the way mod- ern ophthalmology is practiced and enhanced the lives of patients. Howard Gimbel, MD Dr. Gimbel is a pioneer in cataract and refractive surgery. He was the first ophthalmologist in Canada to use phacoemulsification for the removal of cataracts. He is the de- veloper of the divide and conquer phacoemulsification technique and the co-developer of the continu- ous tear capsulotomy technique, which are accepted as international standards of excellence for their safety and effectiveness. He has developed many applications of the optic capture technique and other techniques to manage late intraocular lens complications. He uses video and live broadcasts of surgery to share his techniques. He is a clinical professor at the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and clinical pro- fessor at Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California. Dr. Gimbel received his doc- torate in medicine and a master's in public health from Loma Linda University. He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at the White Memori- al Medical Centre, Los Angeles, and began his private practice in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1964. He opened the Gimbel Eye Centre in 1980 and began out-of-hos- pital cataract surgery in an oral surgeon's suite.
