The Essentials ASCRS has expanded symposia in its Essentials track. "Refractive Cataract Surgery Essentials" today at 1 p.m. will include relevant preop considerations, intraop- erative techniques, the postop unhappy patient, the business side of things, patient consent, and more. An Essentials and YES track symposium during this same timeslot will cover lessons learned in challenging and complicated cases. An ASCRS Retina Com- mittee-sponsored symposium will give surgeons "Everything You Need to Know About Intravitreal Injections" today at 1 p.m. When it comes to hitting re- fractive IOL targets, "Nailing the Best IOL Refractive Outcomes – Let the Experts Update You" today at 3 p.m. will give attendees essential knowledge on optics, impact of axial length, toric IOLs, ray tracing, and the role of artifi- cial intelligence. Surgical essentials that can help get you out of trouble in cat- aract surgery, from soft and hard cataracts to a capsulorhexis run- ning wide or a broken posterior capsule, will be offered on Sunday at 8 a.m. Cornea essentials, from management of epithelial defects to various forms of ocular surface disease and its management to EK surgeries to crosslinking, will be presented during this same time. "The Complete Guide to Management of Astigmatism: Everything You Need to Know to Optimize Cornea and Lens-based Options" on Sunday at 3 p.m. will cover measuring astigmatism and the options for doing so, case pre- sentations, nomograms, intraop- erative aberrometry, management F rom the new to the es- sential, the 2019 ASCRS ASOA Annual Meeting boasts 30 symposia that run today through Tuesday. What's new There are several new symposia at the Annual Meeting this year. One of the most anticipated is "The Winning Pitch Challenge" on Sunday at 3 p.m. Described as ophthalmology "Shark Tank" without the bite, this symposium will feature innovative ideas that were submitted ahead of the meeting. The finalists, who were paired with mentors, then pitch the ideas to a panel of experts in ophthalmology, industry, and investment. The winning pitch will receive a $10,000 prize. "Sweating Bullets: A New Competition" on Sunday at 3 p.m. will have expert faculty on Amer- ican and international teams who will present cases that caused them to "sweat bullets" in surgery. Q&A with the moderator will follow. The ASCRS Government Relations Committee is sponsor- ing a new symposium, "Is this the End of Fee-for Service?" on Sunday at 1 p.m. It will address the bipartisan effort moving toward advanced alternative payment models. In "Mastering It All" on Sun- day, May 5, at 1 p.m., an all-female panel will share their favorite surgical techniques or technologies that they've added for the year, life hacks, pearls for successful businesses, improving presenta- tion skills, and more. In the same Symposia continue as meeting highlights Controversies in Anterior Segment Surgery Nick Mamalis, MD, and Sathish Srinivasan, MD, will moderate the Monday symposium sponsored by the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery at 1 p.m. This point/counterpoint-style session will include presentations from Nicole Fram, MD, on the staying power of intraoperative aberrometry, and Douglas Koch, MD, on why he thinks modern IOL formulas supersede this technology; Richard Davidson, MD, on FLACS for white cataracts, and Soon-Phaik Chee, MD, on why she thinks manual phaco is effective and safe for these cataracts; and Abhay Vasavada, MD, who thinks pars plana anterior vitrectomy is best, and Kevin Mill- er, MD, on why he thinks traditional anterior vitrectomy is good enough. Surgical Essentials: Getting You out of Trouble in Cataract Surgery This symposium on Sunday at 8 a.m., which is part of the Essentials track, is spon- sored by the Alliance of Cataract and Refractive Specialty Societies, and moderated by Edward Holland, MD, Beatrice Cochener, MD, William De La Pena, MD, and Graham Barrett, MD. Presentations include "Managing Soft Cataracts" from Ronald Yeoh, MD, "What Do I Do If the Capsulorhexis Runs Wide or Radializes?" from Richard Tipperman, MD, "Management of Hard/Brunescent Cataracts" from Guy Kleinmann, MD, "What Do I Do if the Pupil Comes Down Midway Through a Case" from Tal Raviv, MD, "How to Get Out of Trouble When the Posterior Capsule is Broken" from Thomas Kohnen, MD, PhD, and "Management of Subluxated Lenses" from Jorge Domene Sr., MD. Is This the End of Fee-for-Service? Sponsored by the ASCRS Government Relations Committee, this symposium on Sunday at 1 p.m. focuses on the bipartisan effort that seems to be moving physicians out of Medicare fee-for-service toward advanced alternative payment models, such as value-based payment. Harold Miller, an expert on healthcare payment and delivery reform, along with ASCRS ophthalmologists, will discuss the possible advanced alternative payment models in ophthalmology and healthcare quality. Following, Steve Forbes, one-time presidential candidate and chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media, will speak on value-based payment and how healthcare costs affect the economy. This symposium will be moderated by Parag Parekh, MD, chair of the ASCRS Government Relations Committee, and Mr. Miller. Mastering it All This all-female special interest symposium on Sunday at 1 p.m., moderated by Preeya Gupta, MD, and Susan MacDonald, MD, features surgical mastery, busi- ness tips, and work-life balance hacks. Elizabeth Yeu, MD, Kendall Donaldson, MD, and Marjan Farid, MD, will offer their favorite surgical techniques of 2019, followed by Leela Raju, MD, who will talk about the best technology that she's added to her practice. Neda Shamie, MD, will discuss "Life Hacks That Make Your Life Better," while Denise Visco, MD, will offer pearls for running a success- ful business. Sumitra Khandelwal, MD, will focus on "Improving Your Presenta- tion Prowess" and Priyanka Sood, MD, will discuss "Putting You First."
