8 | EYEWORLD DAILY NEWS | MAY 5, 2019 ASCRS NEWS by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer/ Meetings Editor testants were selected from these videos. Dr. Holland said there was a large interest in participating, and there are no repeat contes- tants from last year. The topics for this year's The Voice of Ophthalmology lectures will include bilateral sequential cataract surgery, evaluation of the use of MIGS, intracameral antibiotics for endophthalmitis, if anterior cham- ber lenses should still be used, and premium IOLs in patients with other comorbidities. T he Sunday Summit will be held today from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The session has two parts: the annual ASCRS Lecture on Sci- ence, Medicine and Tech- nology and The Voice of Ophthalmology. Edward Holland, MD, ASCRS program chair, spoke to EyeWorld about what to expect at this year's Sunday Summit. ASCRS Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology The ASCRS Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology is given by a non-ophthalmologist but speaks to a topic of interest to our audience, Dr. Holland said. "This year we have John Medi- na, PhD, who's a developmental molecular biologist," he said. "He has a lifelong fascination with how the mind reacts to and organizes information." Dr. Medina is the author of a number of books, including Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School, Brain Rules for Aging Well: 10 Prin- ciples for Staying Vital, Happy, and Sharp, and Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to Five. Dr. Holland said Dr. Medina will focus on how ophthalmolo- gy relates to his concepts of the brain. "No matter your specialty in ophthalmology, I think there's interest in how the brain works and how it ages," Dr. Holland said. The Voice of Ophthalmology The second part of the Sunday Summit will be The Voice of Oph- thalmology, back for its second year. "Last year, it was very exciting and a standing room-only crowd," Dr. Holland said. This session is modeled after the popular television show The Voice, including the chairs and celebrity coaches. During the session, five contestants will present their opinion on current and controversial topics, and the session's coaches decide if they want to support each contestant. The contestant then picks one of the coaches to further debate the topic with an expert panel. Last year's coaches are back and include Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Elizabeth Yeu, MD, John Berdahl, MD, and Iqbal "Ike" Ahmed, MD. "It's an interesting and enter- taining format, and at the end of the day, it's also very good educa- tion," Dr. Holland said.
