Ms. Silletto educates ASOA attendees on how to improve
employee retention in their practices.
day that an application sits on your
desk or in your inbox is a day you
are losing good candidates, she
said.
Guidance upon entry
Be prepared for new hires on day
one. Know what they're going
to do that day and that week and
have a training plan in place. Write
down things that new employees
might otherwise need to memo-
rize; label everything (physical and
electronic) so that new hires can
find things faster; and create fool-
proof checklists.
New staffing model
Advance employees within the
position. Staff members need ad-
vancement and recognition to feel
fulfilled in their job, Ms. Silletto
said.

Trust through
transparency
If you have a policy, be prepared
to talk with new hires and inter-
viewees about why that policy or
operation is in place.
Another tip Ms. Silletto of-
fered is to break down the big car-
rots offered to retain employees
into smaller, more frequent baby
carrots along the way, selecting
things that are valuable to the em-
ployee as these carrots. Finally, she
said if anyone is not treating new
hires with respect, stop it. "This
is something we cannot allow
anymore to happen in our organi-
zations," Ms. Silletto said.
