The faculty includes John Berdahl, MD, Marjan Farid, MD, Sumit "Sam" Garg, MD, and Thomas Kohnen, MD. Dr. Vukich will start by addressing data from the 2018 ASCRS Clinical Survey related to presbyopia correction. Currently 9% of cataract procedures involve a presbyopia- correcting IOL, while 25% of cataract procedures are targeted for monovision. Dr. Vukich will also address the most significant barriers to performing more presbyopia correcting procedures, which are visual quality concerns and patients' ability to afford the additional cost. Dr. Farid will then begin with an overview of the pros and cons of monovision IOL procedures and ways surgeons can im- prove the monovision option by mixing different IOLs to person- alize the visual needs of the presbyopic cataract patient. Drs. Kohnen and Garg will speak about the new level of outcomes doctors can expect from trifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs, respectively. ASCRS Clinical Survey data shows that trifocals are currently the most common presbyopia IOL option for international members, while EDOFs are the most common option for U.S. members. Finally, Dr. Berdahl will talk about how to manage residual refractive errors in these patients and what to do when objective postop data doesn't match the subjective patient satisfaction/ symptoms. ASCRS Clinical Survey data shows that 36% of respondents think that more than 0.5 D of cylinder is acceptable postoperatively in these presbyopia IOL patients. The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion on the future of presbyopia correction options both in the near and far term, with everything from new lens designs to medical therapy options. The 1-hour symposium will take place in ballroom 20D. Registration and the reception will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the educational program running from noon to 1:00 p.m. The event is supported by independent educational grants from Johnson & Johnson Vision and Alcon.
