8 | EYEWORLD DAILY NEWS | MAY 6, 2019 ASCRS NEWS ASCRS ASOA ANNUAL MEETING by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer/ Meetings Editor he said, adding that he thinks he's learned a lot. "My surgical tech- niques have gotten so much better over the years," he said, attributing some of this to watching videos, first by cassette tapes of surgery and now from a mobile device. This year's Film Festival will also feature the first Life- time Achievement Award. With the event approaching its 40th anniversary, Dr. Tauber said he wanted to be able to give this award to someone who has done a lifetime's worth of work and who many have been influenced by. Dr. Tauber said the idea to have this special award was met with great enthusiasm by both the ASCRS Executive Committee and by the judges. To find out who will receive the inaugural Lifetime Achieve- ment Award and who will take home the top prizes, be sure to attend the ASCRS Film Festival tonight. T he 37th ASCRS Film Festival reception and awards ceremony will take place today from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. in room 20ABC. Nine panelists have judged the films submitted based on applicability/education, originality, scientific content/ validity, clarity, cinematic quality, and artistic effects. This year there were 175 video submissions from 30 different countries. Categories include Cataract Complications, Cataract/Implant Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, In- house Production, Instruments & Devices/IOLs, New Producer/ Young Physician, New Tech- niques, Quality Teaching, Refrac- tive/Cornea Surgery, and Special Interest. Shachar Tauber, MD, Springfield, Missouri, again served as the chair of the Film Festi- val, with Susan MacDonald, MD, Peabody, Massachusetts, as the chief judge, and Fernando Trindade, MD, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, as the international guest judge. Other judges are Bran- don Ayres, MD, Philadelphia, John Hart, MD, Farmington Hills, Michigan, Steve Safran, MD, Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Elizabeth Hofmeister, MD, San Diego, Michael Taravella, MD, Aurora, Colorado, and Jason Jones, MD, Sioux City, Iowa. Dr. Tauber encouraged ev- eryone to attend this year's event. "It's been a highlight for me, and I hope that people make plans to be there," he said. Dr. Tauber said that every year there's a buzz on Tuesday after seeing what was presented on Monday at the Film Festival. "It's great to see what's up and coming and what people are thinking," he said. Judges for the Film Festival rotate every 4 years, so there's always new people coming on who are paired up with senior judges. Each judge has either made videos or been involved in teaching. Gone are the days when we would look at surgical drawings and try to figure out the motion behind the drawings, Dr. Tauber said. "Now, it's a video clip that gets you excited. We take that home to change the way we're doing surgery. What I want out of my judges is their intellect and their ability to find the film that in 8 minutes can plant a seed in the viewer's mind that they want to pursue more information on that topic." Assessing the films for the Film Festival is a long process, which includes looking at the films ahead of the meeting for certain criteria. The judges also meet onsite. "There's a lot of strict criteria, but because it's film and art, there's a lot of discretion," Dr. Tauber said. In his second year as chair- man, Dr. Tauber said that he's grateful to be involved in the Film Festival.
