Hands-on practice the highlight of Skills Transfer Sessions by Vanessa Caceres EyeWorld Contributing Writer S urgeons can learn a lot from attending clinical sessions at meetings, but it's hard to beat the value of hands-on practice. Attendees at the Skills Transfer Sessions get valuable hands-on practice with surgical techniques. This year's Skills Transfer Sessions include • Advanced Phaco • Anterior Vitrectomy • Limbal Relaxing Incisions/Peripheral Corneal Relaxing Incisions • Iris Suture • Extracapsular Cataract Extraction/ Small Incision Sutureless Cataract Surgery "The main value of a skills transfer course is that it moves didactic learning one step closer to clinical practice," said Kevin M. Miller, MD, Los Angeles. Dr. Miller will be the course instructor for one of the sessions on advanced phaco. "There is a significant distance between didactic learning and clinical practice as many practitioners are fearful to try new techniques." In addition to the course instructors, each course will feature a number of faculty who can help students as they practice the various surgical techniques that they are taught. This helps provide individualized support. "The Skills Transfer Sessions provide a chance to practice in a controlled setting with someone who has experience," said Jason Jones, MD, Sioux City, Iowa, who is leading another advanced phaco course. "There's lot of one-on-one interaction about how things are done. We can address the issues the attendees want to address." Dr. Jones said that the Skills Transfer Sessions are a hallmark of the ASCRS annual meeting. Each Skills Transfer Session requires a separate registration fee of $320 each. Some of the Skills Transfer Sessions have prerequisite courses.
