surface tumors, and non-healing
corneal ulcers.
The second session of the day
will highlight lamellar surgery.
"What's happened in cornea sur-
gery is the transition to lamellar
keratoplasty," Dr. Holland said.
"DALK is performed for stromal
disease, endothelial keratoplasty
for endothelial disease, and ocular
surface stem cell transplant for
epithelial disease." This session
will cover techniques in lamellar
surgery, complicated cases, cross-
linking, and more.
Ocular surface disease (OSD)
will be the topic of one of the af-
ternoon sessions, with the session
divided into updates in lid margin
disease management and contro-
versies and management of severe
ocular surface disease. "We know
that ocular surface disease affects
every aspect of ophthalmology,"
Dr. Holland said. Emerging treat-
ments will be highlighted, and
cases will be shared in the contro-
versies section.
Finishing up the program, Dr.
Holland and Dr. Mah will moder-
ate a session on perspectives in
cornea looking at "where we were
and where we're going." This ses-
sion will include cornea experts
who can look back at their years
in the field and reflect on where
it might be heading. Dr. Holland
said he expects this session to be
exciting, with faculty including
Mark Mannis, MD, Peter Laibson,
MD, Marguerite McDonald, MD,
Michael Belin, MD, and oth-
ers, who will cover topics from
keratoplasty to eye banking to
keratoconus and more. "It'll be a
fun session because I think it's im-
portant to know where we were
to help us figure out the future,"
he said.
Cornea Day to cover OSD, lamellar surgery,
and other major topics
C
ornea Day will take place
as part of ASCRS Sub-
specialty Day today from
8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Edward Holland, MD, and Francis
Mah, MD, serve as chairs of the
program. Dr. Holland spoke to
EyeWorld about what he's looking
forward to and what attendees
can expect.
"We're excited that Cornea
Day is going to be sponsored
by the ASCRS Cornea Clinical
Committee," he said. "We have
a program that's geared toward
corneal specialists but has a lot
of information for comprehensive
ophthalmologists."
Kicking off the program will
be a video-based session on cor-
nea disasters. Some of the issues
scheduled to be covered include
corneal perforations, infectious
keratitis, fungal keratitis, ocular
