Studies have found im-
provement in dry eye syndrome
(DES) symptoms after orbicu-
laris-sparing bilateral upper lid
blepharoplasty (BULB) surgery,
but others have found worsening
symptoms and with orbicularis-ex-
cising BULB.
The research question he and
his co-authors had was "Does the
type of BULB affect the incidence
and severity of DES, taking into
consideration signs and symptoms
of preoperative DES?" Patients
were randomized to undergo
either orbicularis-excising BULB
or orbicularis-sparing BULB. All
patients received a preop evalu-
ation, then were evaluated at 1
month postop and 1 year post-
op. Preoperatively, all patients
underwent Schirmer's 1 test,
InflammaDry (Quidel), TBUT,
lissamine green staining, LipiView
(Johnson & Johnson Vision), tear
osmolarity, and SPEED score.
Dr. Riaz noted that both
groups had a reduction in SPEED
score at 1 month compared to

Spotlight on ocular
surface topics
A paper session on Saturday after-

topics. "Dry Eye Syndrome in the
Blepharoplasty Patient: Incidence,
Predictive Signs, and Post-Oper-

by Kamran Riaz, MD; co-authors
were Victoria Bugg, MD, Annie
Moreau, MD, Juliana Siegler, and
David Murphy, MD.
"We know that dry eye
