He is also Professor of Ophthal- mology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Spaeth received his undergraduate degree from Yale University in 1954 and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1959. He completed his residency at Wills Eye Hospital, followed by a fellowship in glaucoma at the National Institute of Neurologi- cal Disease and Blindness, part of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Spaeth's research has focused on the characterization and natural history of the cardinal manifestations of glaucoma: the history, the anterior chamber angle, the visual field, and the optic nerve. Dr. Spaeth is the found- ing member and first president of the American Glaucoma Society. He was also a founder of the Glaucoma Service at the Foundation to Prevent Blind- ness and has received many awards, including the Weisenfeld Medal from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award. He was awarded the Life Achievement Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2000. Dr. Spaeth has contributed to more than 400 hundred publications, covering all aspects of the glaucoma field. He has published more than 200 editorials, 24 books, and has been involved in the development of meth- ods to test vision and functional ability. He has served in leadership roles at ophthalmic publications, and through- out his career, Dr. Spaeth has also been involved in teaching more than 300 trainees who now work in 24 countries on six continents. of the Department of Ophthalmology, a professor of biomedical engineering, and founding director of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine. He also served as interim dean of the School of Medicine in 2014. In 2016, he was honored with an endowed chair. While at the Univer- sity of California, Irvine, Dr. Steinert helped improve corneal transplantation by replacing the existing handheld surgical blade-based approach with a femtosecond laser approach. Dr. Steinert received numerous awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and ASCRS, including the Life Achievement Honor Award and Entrepreneurship Lifetime Inno- vator Award. He was also honored for advancing eyecare with the Presiden- tial Recognition Award, the prestigious Barraquer Award from the Internation- al Society of Refractive Surgery, the Visionary Award from the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and the Distin- guished Clinical Achievement Award from Harvard Medical School. The New England Ophthalmological Society presented him with the Distinguished Achievement Award, and the Hawai- ian Eye Foundation honored him with the Philip M. Corboy, M.D. Memorial Award. In addition, the Cornea Society gave him the Claes Dohlman Award for Teaching Excellence. In addition to his awards, acknowl- edgments, and leadership roles, Dr. Steinert authored numerous peer-re- viewed journal articles, book chapters, and textbooks. George Spaeth, MD, FACS George Spa- eth, MD, FACS, is the Lewis J. Esposito Glauco- ma Research Professor and Director Emeritus of the Glaucoma Service at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, A SCRS is inducting the late Roger Steinert, MD, and George Spaeth, MD, into its Ophthalmology Hall of Fame at today's Opening General Session. The ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame was created in 1999 to recognize pioneers in ophthalmology. The Hall of Fame can be viewed onsite within the ASCRS Education Hub. Roger F. Steinert, MD Roger F. Steinert, MD, (1950–2017) earned his med- ical degree from Harvard Medical School and com- pleted residency at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. He spent more than 20 years on the Harvard Medical School faculty before moving to the University of California, Irvine, Medical School, becoming chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and founding director of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. He was president of ASCRS from 2005– 2006. Dr. Steinert was one of the world's foremost experts in the fields of cata- ract surgery, corneal transplantation, and laser refractive vision correction. His clinical and research breakthroughs stretch back to the early days of laser refractive surgery. His lab group was the second in the world to study excimer laser applications for refrac- tive surgery and LASIK, and he was among the first group of surgeons to conduct U.S. Food & Drug Administra- tion (FDA) trials of phototherapeutic and photorefractive keratectomy in the 1980s. Dr. Steinert was a presenter to the FDA ophthalmic devices pan- el, which led to the 1993 approval of phototherapeutic keratectomy and the 1995 approval of photorefractive keratectomy.
