28 | EYEWORLD DAILY NEWS | MAY 5, 2023 ASCRS ANNUAL MEETING DAILY NEWS Marguerite McDonald, MD Marguerite McDonald, MD, a past president of ASCRS, is a pioneer in refractive surgery and known for performing the first exci- mer laser procedure in patients. Dr. McDonald received her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, did an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, and an ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital/Cornell. She had a fellowship in corneal and external diseases with Herbert Kaufman, In her career, Dr. McDonald was instrumental in the development of epikeratophakia, synthetic kerato- phakia, epi-LASIK, and conductive keratoplasty. She continues to re- search refractive surgery and dry eye treatments. Dr. McDonald has received more than 90 awards and recogni- tions, serves on the editorial boards of numerous clinical and scientific journals, and is a member of several professional societies, in which she has held leadership positions. R. Townley Paton, MD (1909–1984) R. Townley Paton, MD, is considered a pioneer in the field of corneal transplantation. He is the founder of modern eye banking practices and established the first eye bank in the U.S. Dr. Paton received his under- graduate degree from Princeton University and went on to medical school at Cambridge University and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his intern- ship and residency at Johns Hopkins, where he became chief resident. Dr. Paton began performing corneal transplants in the 1930s and founded the Eye Bank for Sight Restoration in New York City in 1944. He was also the founder of the Eye Bank Association of America. He published extensively on the topic of transplantation surgery and was a member of several societies and organizations. Several honorary lectureships and awards have been established in Dr. Paton's name. MD, at Louisiana State University Medical School. Dr. McDonald went on to hold a tenured position at Louisiana State University Medical School and became a full professor of ophthal- mology, director of the Corneal Service, and chairman of Promotions and Tenure before she established the Southern Vision Institute in 1994. Dr. McDonald joined Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island in 2006. She is currently a clinical profes- sor of ophthalmology at New York University and a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Tulane Univer- sity Medical School.
