Cystinosis is described as accumulation of cystine crystals in the lysosomes of the body. Nephro-
pathic and non-nephropathic cystinosis present with ocular manifestations through the accumula-
tion of cystine crystals within all layers of the cornea. Although infantile and juvenile nephropathic
cystinosis standard of care includes oral treatment with cysteamine, this is ineffective for ocular
cystine crystals. Without topical treatment with a cystine-depleting agent, cystine crystals will
continue to accumulate in the corneal tissues, resulting in sensitivity to light, corneal erosion, and
decreased QoL. Join us as we present an overview of cystinosis and discuss evidence-based man-
agement strategies for this disease.
