Dr. Yeu said it's been the "big- gest highlight and biggest honor of my professional career" to serve as president. Dr. Thompson described his journey of how he became an oph- thalmologist and first got involved with ASCRS. He was first accepted for the Annual Meeting in 1988 with research on betadine when he was a resident. "When I got into practice, I knew I had to be part of this organi- zation," he said. Educator Award Dr. Thompson presented the ASCRS Educator Award to Nir Shoham-Hazon, MD. His journey in ophthalmology is marked by an un- wavering commitment to excellence T he ASCRS Annual Meeting officially kicked off on Friday afternoon with the opening session and reception. ASCRS is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Thomas Samuelson, MD, in his first meeting as ASCRS Program Chair, kicked off the session. "It's great to be back in Boston, and final- ly our meeting is back in April where it belongs," Dr. Samuelson said. "This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this storied orga- nization," he said. Dr. Samuelson acknowledged Kenneth Hoffer, MD, who founded ASCRS, then known as AIOIS, in 1974, and he also acknowl- edged David Karcher, former ASCRS Executive Director for 37 years. Dr. Samuelson also thanked the many sponsors of the ASCRS Annual Meeting, as well as the many physi- cians and other volunteers who help put the content together. in patient care, education, and research, Dr. Thompson said. Dr. Shoham-Hazon expressed his deepest appreciation to ASCRS, say- ing that he is indebted to his patients and colleagues "whose trust and confidence in my abilities have mo- tivated me to continually strive for excellence in my practice." He added that, "I believe it is our collective ASCRS Annual Meeting kicks off 50th anniversary celebration
