EW SHOW DAILY 43 ASCRS•ASOA SYMPOSIUM & CONGRESS, BOSTON 2014 She will demonstrate how dry eye can negatively affect keratometry, topography, wavefront imaging, IOL power calculation, and decisions about astigmatic correction, lens exchange and enhancement. According to the 2013 ASCRS Clinical Survey, most anterior segment surgeons say that about 21% of their cataract surgery pa- tients have dry eye before surgery. "The evidence suggests that estimate is too low," said program moderator Neda Shamie, MD, Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. "Surgeons may be missing opportu- nities to improve outcomes simply by treating the ocular surface preop- eratively," she says. According to the survey, most surgeons have not yet implemented advanced point-of-care diagnostics to screen patients, and awareness of guidelines for dry eye treatment remains limited. The survey also found that while the majority (86%) agree or strongly agree that dry eye significantly affects postoperative Panel continued from page 41 satisfaction in cataract and refractive patients, most also believe it takes more time to manage these patients in their practices. "With good protocols, preop treatment of ocular surface disorders need not be a burden or cause delays in surgical scheduling," says Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island. He and others on the panel will discuss therapeutic regimens that surgeons can implement to prepare patients for accurate preoperative measure- ments, a positive surgical experi- ence, and improved visual outcomes. Topics to be covered in this symposium include: • Tear Film: The Neglected Refrac- tive Interface – Marjan Farid, MD • Consequence of Neglect: The Tear Film, Preoperative Planning, and Postoperative Outcomes – Cynthia Matossian, MD • Therapeutic Protocols for Ocular Surface Support for the Refractive Cataract Patient – Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD EW What session are you looking forward to the most? "The femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery courses" –Edward Zobian, MD, Wyomissing, Pa. "Innovations in cataract surgery" –Nicola Rosa, MD, Salerno, Italy "Anything on the presbyopic theme" –Lise Dannevig, MD, PhD, Kristiansand, Norway Street Talk
