EW SHOW DAILY 47 reading ability and loss of clarity— went wrong," he will tell them. The solution? He outlines options: "Certain lens implant technologies will replace only one issue, the cloudiness. Certain im- plant technologies will replace both issues, the cloudiness and the read- ing function." He emphasized the importance of keeping the discus- sion simple so that patients fully un- derstand and are not overwhelmed by the options in implants and tech- nology. Focusing on the fact that there are two distinct issues to be ad- dressed—presbyopia and cataract— are important in these discussions, he said, so that patients are clear on what options will and will not do. The goal is always to achieve a happy patient postoperatively, and with that in mind, he said that pa- tients can often be divided into two groups—those who will achieve that happiness with traditional surgery, and those who want to opt for ad- vanced refractive cataract surgery. Through educating patients with care, the distinctions between those two groups can best be discovered, he said. Other speakers at the session were Eric Donnenfeld, MD, New York, Robert P. Rivera, MD, Draper, Utah, Keith A. Walter, MD, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Matt Jensen, MBA, Sioux Falls, S.D. Dr. Rivera gave the talk "Top 5 Pearls For Maximizing Outcomes in Today's LACS Practice." The first pearl was that the surgeon needs to understand and believe in this surgery, first and foremost. "For so many years, we talked our patients out of the belief that cataract surgery was done with lasers," he said. "Now we find ourselves talking our patients into believing their cataract surgery should be done with a laser." Physicians have to believe that femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is a viable and effective op- tion. "If you don't have conviction, patients will sense this. You need to be able to give a firm, consistent recommendation." He recommended that surgeons visit a successful femtosecond laser- assisted cataract surgery practice and take notes on how that practice was started, how it is run, and how the surgeon discusses the technology with patients. "Learn how people created their wheel before you create yours," Dr. Rivera said. EW Editors' note: This event was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Abbott Medical Optics.
