EW SHOW DAILY 32 L ike The Tonight Show on which the EyeWorld CME Education symposium ti- tled "Reducing the Impact of Cataract Surgical Stress by Mitigating Inflammation and Reducing Ultrasound Energy" was modeled, things do change, said moderator Terry Kim, MD, Durham, N.C. The popular late night talk show that first aired in 1954 recently underwent significant change when Jay Leno handed hosting duties over to Jimmy Fallon. Anti-inflammatory regimens have also undergone significant changes over time. These changes have resulted in less traumatic surgery and better outcomes, the flip side being the establishment of what Dr. Kim called "the new normal": Better outcomes, he said, have heightened the level of patient expectations. "Delivering on these expecta- tions requires excellent surgical technique and highly effective man- agement of healing and inflamma- tion," said Dr. Kim. Do surgeons deliver? Citing data from the Swedish National Cataract Registry study, Dr. Kim said that only 71% of cataract surgeries are meeting the standard of being within ±0.5 D of target. In the 2013 ASCRS Clinical Survey, which involved a total of 1,041 unique respondents, most, said Dr. Kim, agreed that inflamma- tion has a significant impact on variability: 71% agreed it impacts vi- sual acuity and quality results; 81% agreed it impacts visual recovery time; and 83% agreed it impacts patient comfort and satisfaction. Postop inflammation, said Sonia H. Yoo, MD, Miami, affects the entire eye, front to back, and in terms of outcomes it affects speed of recovery and final visual acuity. Among the factors that influence inflammation are cataract density, the amount of balanced salt solution used during irrigation and Monday, April 28, 2014 Meeting Reporter Inflammation, phaco energy impact cataract surgical stress by Chiles Aedam R.
