Koch, CPC, COE, of The Retina Institute in St. Louis, is its 2014–2015 president. The president elect is Charla Ferchow, COE, Eye Physicians of Central Florida, Maitland, Fla. The new vice president is Karen Butler, LPN, COE, Crew Eye Center, Big Rapids, Mich. Sue Balfe, COE, who works with Alexander Hatsis, MD, Rockville Centre, N.Y., is a new Board member. Monday, April 28, 2014 ASOA News Today by Vanessa Caceres EyeWorld Contributing Writer Sharpening skills and knowledge at ASOA's Workshops by Vanessa Caceres EyeWorld Contributing Writer T he ASOA Workshops held annually at the ASOA Congress can give you or your staff in-depth knowledge of leadership, coding, and practice management. Many of the ASOA Workshops were held on Friday, and the COE Review Course continued through Saturday. The Certified Ophthalmic Executive (COE) Review Course covers business operations, basic ophthalmic knowledge, legal and regulatory affairs, and risk management, among other topics. This course is one of many suggested resources for preparation for the COE exam. At "Maximizing Leadership Skills," attendees discovered how to address difficult personnel challenges. This half-day seminar included interactive exercises, case studies, and sharing of best practices. The "ICD-10 Implementation Training" session was a hands-on, interactive workshop to prepare attendees for ICD-10 implementation. Although implementation was recently postponed by Congress until October 1, 2015, ASOA encourages its members to use the delay as additional time to prepare and focus on continued education and training. This workshop was led by the Corcoran Consulting Group. At the "Practice Management Boot Camp: What You Must Know to Succeed," new ophthalmic practice managers discovered the basics of practice management in eight core areas. During "Pinto Practice Coaching," consultant John B. Pinto, San Diego, discussed how ophthalmic administrators and other practice leaders can become better skilled at leading practices. "Everyday Use of Excel" covered the popular computer program Excel during two courses—one for beginners and one for advanced users. "Lean Six Sigma for Your Practice" introduced attendees to the Lean Six Sigma principles of improving quality, efficiency, and cost. Tomorrow, the workshop "Dale Carnegie Leadership" will help attendees strengthen interpersonal relationships and manage stress in today's fast-changing workplace.
