Ahmed, MD EW Best paper of session winners Run for Sight raises funds for ASCRS Foundation T he second annual Run for Sight charity race took place on Sunday morning, raising $34,000 to benefit the ASCRS Foundation's humanitarian eyecare programs. The 5-kilometer run and 1-mile walk took place on Boston's historic Castle Island, home to Fort Inde- pendence. The course looped around the fort and circled Pleasure Bay, giving participants beautiful views of Boston's skyline and harbor as well as the chance to watch planes fly in to nearby Logan International Airport. Despite the cold, rainy weather, 230 runners and 32 walk- ers participated in the event, both for the exercise and to support the work of the Foundation. Many participants took part in the race alongside friends and family. Joe Cotter of Roanoke, Va., finished the race second overall, running the course with his father, Frank Cotter, MD. "No matter what city we travel to, I always enter the donor race, and it's the highlight of our trip," said Dr. Cotter. Joe Cotter finished with a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds. Bart Jaeren of Murcia, Spain, was the fastest runner among men and the fastest overall, reaching the finish line in 16 minutes, 55 sec- onds. The fastest women to finish the course were friends and colleagues Madeleine O'Meara of San Francisco and Kathryn Hatch of Boston. The women started the race with the goal of finishing together under 20 minutes, and by coming in at 19 minutes, 34 seconds, "we did everything we wanted to do," said Ms. O'Meara. The event was sponsored by TearLab, a San Diego-based com- pany that aims to improve the quality of life for eyecare patients through the development of lab-on-a-chip technologies for the diagnosis of dry eye disease. The Foundation gave special thanks to the Department of Conservation and Resources of Massachusetts for making the site available, and to the student ath- letes from nearby Boston University and Northeastern University who volunteered during the event.
