"Cornea Day. I'm looking into some courses tomorrow, so just absorbing what's being offered." –Michael Garvey, MD, Portland, Maine "I'm going to catch up on my CME. Attendees at the Skills Transfer Sessions get valuable hands-on practice with surgical techniques. This year's Skills Transfer Sessions include: • Advanced Phaco • Anterior Vitrectomy • Limbal Relaxing Incisions/Periph- eral Corneal Relaxing Incisions • Iris Suture • Extracapsular Cataract Extraction/Small Incision Sutureless Cataract Surgery • Trabs and Tubes for the Comprehensive Ophthalmologist "Learning new surgical proce- dures can be a daunting task for most ophthalmologists," said Bonnie An Henderson, MD, Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. Dr. Henderson is chair of the Skills Transfer Subcommittee. "Listening to a lecture or watching a few videos is often not enough to become comfortable enough to perform the procedure on a live patient. The Skills Transfer labs held at ASCRS are incredibly valuable for practicing and developing competency before attempting the procedure on a patient." There are sessions for all levels of surgeons, including beginners, experienced surgeons, and those who need a refresher, Dr. Henderson said. In addition to the course instructors, each course will feature a number of faculty who can help students as they practice the various surgical techniques that they have learned. This helps provide individu- alized support. "The faculty have been selected not just for their surgical expertise but also for their teaching abilities," said Dr. Henderson. "They are dedicated teachers who will spend the necessary time to explain each step of a procedure." The Skills Transfer Sessions require a separate registration fee of $320 each. Some of the Skills Transfer Sessions have prerequisite courses. See the Final Program for more details. EW by Vanessa Caceres Bonnie An Henderson, MD, is the Skills Transfer Subcommittee chair
