EW SHOW DAILY 16 T he Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) will hold its 13th annual three-day Technicians & Nurses Program during the 2014 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress here in Boston. The Technicians & Nurses Program features clinical and surgical courses, allowing attendees to customize their agenda from a range of topics relevant to their position. JCAHPO is the international certifying and continuing education agency for allied health personnel in ophthalmology and offers certification at three core levels: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), and Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT). "By using qualified, well-trained and certified ophthalmic medical technicians, patient care and physi- cian productivity are enhanced," said JCAHPO president Karl Golnik, MD. "Ophthalmologists consistently state that their certified technicians contribute significantly to produc- tivity by increasing the number of patients seen per hour, problem solving, and triage." The program consists of 36 courses, including an ASC track each morning, and offers the oppor- tunity to earn a maximum of 18 CE credits per person. The Technicians & Nurses Program will take place in Saturday, April 26, 2014 ASCRS News Today JCAHPO hosts the ASCRS Nurses & Technicians Program rooms 156ABC and 157ABC of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Select courses have been ap- proved for CA BRN, AOC, and OPS credits. Additional Group B credits are available by attending physician courses/symposia/paper sessions at the meeting that are designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. "The Technicians & Nurses Program is a valuable training opportunity to ensure that your eyecare team's knowledge and skills stay current on research, treatments, and technologies to ensure increased productivity in these and other areas in the clinic," Dr. Golnik said. Notable presenters and their courses at the 2014 Technicians & Nurses Program include: • Alan Carlson, MD: Keratoconus: Recent Advances in Our Understanding and Treatment • Stephen Scoper, MD: Premium IOLs: Good Candidate or Not? • Mary Lou Jackson, MD: Compre- hensive Vision Rehabilitation • E. Ann Rose: ICD-10 Overview: How the Change Will Impact Technicians and Nurses. Of significant note is a presenta- tion by Iqbal (Ike) K. Ahmed, MD, titled "What's New in Glaucoma Surgery?" In 2010, Dr. Ahmed was selected as one of Canada's "Top 40 under 40"—a prestigious, national award recognizing significant achievements at a young. EW T he Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) conducted its annual written exam review courses on Friday, April 25, for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), and Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) exams. ATPO has provided certification review courses at ASCRS for nearly 10 years and assisted thousands of ophthalmic techni- cians to gain the confidence and skills needed to prepare for the JCAHPO certification examinations. The COA, COT, and COMT certification review courses offered during the meeting are designed to serve as an overview of content areas covered on the JCAHPO certification exams. Each session is taught by a qualified and experienced JCAHPO certified instructor who provides attendees with an overview of the exam content areas and offers helpful tips and suggestions for attendees who are completing their final preparation for the exam. COA, COT, and COMT content areas reviewed during the sessions included: • History Taking • Pupillary Assessment • Contact Lenses • Equipment Maintenance and Repair • Lensometry • Keratometry • Medical Ethics, Legal and Regulatory Issues • Microbiology • Pharmacology • Ocular Motility • Assisting in Surgical Procedures • Ophthalmic Patient Services and Education • Ophthalmic Imaging • Refractometry • Spectacle Skills • Supplemental Skills • Tonometry • Visual Assessment • Visual Fields ATPO will also offer practical, hands-on training sessions for the COT and COMT certification examinations at its annual meeting, October 17–20, 2014, held in conjunction with JCAHPO and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
