EW SHOW DAILY 38 Cataract and refractive sessions not to be missed Saturday, April 26, 2014 ASCRS Symposia by Rich Daly C ontinuing challenges and emerging developments in astigmatism will be the focus of the ASCRS Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee's symposium on astigmatism management today from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. The session, moderated by Doyle Stulting, MD, and John A. Vukich, MD, will include panel discussions with Michael O'Keefe, MB, Louis E. Probst, MD, Jonathan B. Rubenstein, MD, Charles D. Reilly, MD, and William B. Trattler, MD. Updates on longstanding astigmatism challenges will begin with Dr. Vukich's presentation of the 2013 ASCRS Clinical Survey results on astigmatism. Steve C. Schallhorn, MD, will present "What Does Normal Look Like: Learnings Derived From a Large Database," and Scott M. MacRae, MD, will present on "Astigmatism: How Various Magnitudes and Manifestations Impact Optical Quality and Patient Satisfaction." Among the new areas of astigmatism research is Douglas D. Koch, MD's, "Posterior Cornea: Is This the Hidden Factor?" Astigmatism's impact on intraocular lens implantation will be explored by "Post Premium IOL: How Much Residual Error is Acceptable and What To Do About It?" by Karl Stonecipher, MD, and "Maximizing Toric IOL Results: Keys to Measuring and Aligning to the Correct Axis" by Jay S. Pepose, MD. Attendees will also find a focus on astigmatic correction in "Correction of Astigmatism With Laser Vision Correction" by Edward Manche, MD, and "Correction of Astigmatism With LRI" by Kerry D. Solomon, MD. Doyle Stulting, MD, will wrap up the symposium with a presentation titled "Nuts and Bolts of Managing Astigmatism: The Key Calculations You Really Need to Know." Understanding postop problems Surgeons can delve into the prob- lems and solutions to conditions that arise after surgery in a Monday symposium from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. titled "Problems Postop: Pain and Inflammation in the Refractive Surgery Patient." The session, which is sponsored by the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO), will incorporate the 2013 Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, Lecture by Shigeru Kinoshita, MD, titled "Stem Cell Therapy for Corneal Endothelial Disease." The symposium, moderated by Deborah S. Jacobs, MD, Deepinder K. Dhaliwal, MD, and Warren R. Fagadau, MD, will begin with "Innovations in Limbal Stem Cell Transplantation" by Virender Sangwan, MD. Jod S. Mehta, MD, will present "Innovations in Lamellar Keratoplasty"; Marjan Farid, MD, will present "Innovations in Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Keratoplasty"; and Neda Shamie, MD, will discuss "Innovations in Endothelial Keratoplasty: DSAEK." A presentation on "Innovations in Endothelial Keratoplasty: DMEK" by Michael Straiko, MD, will be followed by "Innovations in Kerato- prosthesis" by Kathryn Colby, MD. Updating femtosecond use Surgeons will find a range of updates in the surgical use of femtosecond laser systems in a Tuesday sympo- sium from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., "Femtosecond Laser Refractive Cataract Surgery." The interactive symposium aims to provide an update on the refractive cataract surgery uses of the femtosecond laser but not as a comparison of platforms. The session will feature panelist comparisons of femtosec- ond outcomes and manual proce- dure outcomes. The symposium, moderated by Robert J. Cionni, MD, will also include a discussion of surgical techniques and surgical pearls. Audience responses will help direct the dialogue. Latest cataract refractive approaches Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, will moderate a fast-paced symposium on the latest and greatest in refrac- tive cataract surgery titled "X- Rounds: Refractive Cataract Surgery to the Max" on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. New advances in cataract surgery, refractive IOLs, and case management will be discussed by a panel including David F. Chang, MD, Steven J. Dell, MD, Stephen S. Lane, MD, Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, Stephen G. Slade, MD, Kerry D. Solomon, MD, and Roger F. Steinert, MD. The panel plans to facilitate discussion on important refractive cataract issues facing today's ophthalmologist and highlight femtosecond cataract surgery. The panel will use audience response keypads to further discussion among faculty and attendees. Video-driven insights Video-led symposia include a Monday session from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. titled "Complicated and Chal- lenging Cases in Cataract Surgery Video Symposium." Sponsored by the ASCRS Cataract Clinical Com- mittee and moderated by Rosa M. Braga-Mele, MD, the session will examine some of the world's most challenging cases in cataract and IOL surgery. Cases will be presented by ASCRS members and discussed by the audience and a panel that includes David F. Chang, MD, Steven Dewey, MD, Gary Foster, MD, Bonnie An Henderson, MD, Warren E. Hill, MD, Richard S. Hoffman, MD, Nick Mamalis, MD, Donald N. Serafano, MD, Audrey R. Talley Rostov, MD, Abhay Vasavada, FRCS, and Sonia H. Yoo, MD. Presenters will offer clinical pearls, followed by panelists nomi- nating the most challenging cases at the conclusion of the session. The symposium will also include audience selection of the "Best Teaching Case." Another symposium featuring clinical videos is "Challenging Video Cases for the Young Surgeon," which will be held today from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by the ASCRS Young Physicians and Residents Clinical Committee and moderated by Elizabeth Yeu, MD, the symposium will feature difficult and challenging cataract, IOL, iris and refractive surgical cases pre- sented in video format. Highlights of the basic concepts and fundamen- tals for the beginning surgeon will be provided by committee members, including John P. Berdahl, MD, Clara C. Chan, MD, Edwin S. Chen, MD, Sumit (Sam) Garg, MD, Preeya K. Gupta, MD, Jeremy Z. Kieval, MD, Bryan S. Lee, MD, Ken Y. Lin, MD, Sherman W. Reeves, MD, and Leejee H. Suh, MD.
