EW SHOW DAILY 47 O n Sunday morning, John Vukich, MD, will lead a distinguished faculty in a discussion of commonly held assumptions, new technologies, and clinical advancements for refractive and cataract patients. This EyeWorld CME symposium will take place in the EyeWorld Theater, Hall C, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. It is titled "Today's Innovations in Corneal Refractive Diagnostics, Treatments and Techniques." Dr. Vukich will kick off the event with an overview of the 2013 ASCRS Clinical Survey data, and discuss the educational gaps and beliefs that will be the focus of the event. According to the survey, which represents more than 1,000 ASCRS members, 79% of physicians either use 20/20 UCVA or have no standardized method for assessing successful laser vision correction outcomes; however, can we be achieving more with current technology? Dr. Vukich will also discuss the differences in choosing surface ablation or LASIK for patients: 25% of ASCRS members use the Randleman criteria for LVC patient selection, and respondents believe that LASIK causes dry eye in an average of 35% of patients. Additionally, he will review treat- ment parameters, with 2/3 of the survey population not confident about treating a –7 D 18-year-old with laser vision correction, and almost half uncertain about a +3 D 25-year-old. Dr. Vukich will set the stage for the faculty to address these beliefs and behaviors. The first presenter is Steven Dell, MD, who will touch base on commonly held beliefs on the short- and long-term outcomes, safety, and economics of surface ablation versus LASIK. Overall, ASCRS members report performing 18% surface ablation. Dr. Dell will review whether this number is appropriate based on current data on dry eye and ectasia rates with modern LASIK. Using data from more than 45,000 eyes from a large clinical study done by Optical Express, he will review commonly held LVC beliefs in more detail. Specifically, the Randleman criteria is examined. Dr. Dell will also review rates of dry eye and patient satisfaction, and critical elements that physicians must consider when analyzing the financial implications of either procedure on their practice. Next, Steven Schallhorn, MD, will discuss innovative technologies ASCRS•ASOA SYMPOSIUM & CONGRESS, BOSTON 2014 Sunday symposium covering the latest data, trends, and technologies in corneal refractive surgery INTRODUCING NIDEK'S NEW PRODUCT CAST MEMBER NAVEX Quest , with Final Fit, topography-assisted excimer laser system featuring CATz software.
