EW SHOW DAILY 56 T he Friday morning EyeWorld CME Education event focused on "Developing the Latest Point of Care Ocular Surface Testing Protocol: Making Advanced Decisions From Advanced Diagnos- tics." The program chair was Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, New York, and faculty included Edward J. Holland, MD, Cincinnati, Terry Kim, MD, Durham, N.C., and Elizabeth Yeu, MD, Norfolk, Va. The progression of ocular surface diagnostics, the impact of certain diagnostics on out- comes, using advanced diagnostics in treatment decisions, and imple- menting ocular surface diagnostics into a practice were covered. Dr. Donnenfeld detailed the progression of ocular surface diag- nostics over time, starting from 1904 when the Schirmer's test was first used. Current options for the tear film have expanded quite a bit. Physicians need to be more cost effective in their practices, and these diagnostic tests will be helpful, according to Dr. Donnenfeld. Dr. Holland discussed the impact of ocular surface disease on refractive cataract surgery. The understanding of dry eye disease has evolved with time, but it is still underdiagnosed, he said. Dry eye disease can have an im- pact on refractive outcomes because it can affect the accuracy of meas- urements used for the selection of the IOL and power. Advanced tear film diagnostics can help with quicker and more accurate diagnosis of dry eye for improved accuracy in IOL power calculation and surgical planning, as well as maximizing postoperative acuity and satisfac- tion. "I believe we need to do a better job of screening and diagnosing," Dr. Holland said. As we move to this aging population, I think we're going to be overwhelmed with patients, I think we need to be more efficient in evaluating and treating dry eye," he said. Dr. Kim spoke about using diagnostics to drive treatment and discussed specific tests for dry eye disease. A lot of these diagnostic modalities enable physicians to diagnose on a more specific level, he said. Some of the advanced diagnos- tic modalities include tear composi- tion analysis, serum biomarker testing, and tear film structure and other image analysis. Dr. Kim went into detail on a number of tests, Saturday April 26, 2014 Meeting Reporter EyeWorld CME Education program targets dry eye by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Staff Writer
