EW SHOW DAILY 19 T he Contact Lens Associa- tion of Ophthalmologists (CLAO) will hold its inter- national symposium and congress next year on June 12-15, 2014 in Toronto. The organization, which is dedi- cated to advancing the quality of medical eyecare by providing oph- thalmologists and eyecare profes- sionals with education and training specifically related to contact lens information and science, moved under the management umbrella of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in 2012. Founded in 1963, CLAO currently has about 300 members. Deborah Jacobs, MD, medical director, Boston Foundation for Sight; assistant clinical professor, Harvard Medical School; and a member of the faculty of the cornea service, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, is the scientific programs chair for CLAO. Dr. Jacobs said some of CLAO's main priorities are quality education, professional support, and support for contact lens science. She said the help from ASCRS will be beneficial to CLAO's mission. "ASCRS is an international leader in helping ophthalmologists stay up to date on advances in ante- rior segment surgery. With adminis- trative support from ASCRS for meetings and other education initia- tives, CLAO will keep ophthalmolo- gists at the forefront of the contact lens field, too." The meeting will feature a welcome reception on the first day, followed by programs on June 13-15 to educate attendees on a number of different topics. Dr. Jacobs said that the meeting will focus on areas of innovation in the field of contact lenses. She expects presenters from the fields of ophthalmology, optom- etry, and the basic sciences. "Per- spectives from academia, industry, and private practice will be repre- sented," Dr. Jacobs said. With CLAO's focus on contact lenses, many of the discussions will center on this. Though still in the early planning stages, preliminary topics for the meeting include new options and new directions for con- tact lens discomfort and the busi- ness aspects of contact lenses in a practice. Contact lenses as a thera- peutic platform will be addressed, with attention to drug delivery and myopia control. Specific lenses, aspherics, wavefront-optimized contact lenses, and wavefront- guided contact lenses will also be highlighted. In addition, CLAO expects to include discussions on what is new for keratoconus, including an up- date on corneal collagen crosslink- ing, specialty soft lenses and hybrid lenses and scleral rigid gas perme- able (RGP) lenses. Other broader topics include risk management and ethics and factors regarding imag- ing, optics, visual acuity and visual function in choosing an IOL. EW ASCRS SYMPOSIUM, SAN DIEGO 2011 CLAO gears up for 2014 meeting in Toronto Prominent specialist awarded Cornea Society's high honor Tan, FRCS.
