EW SHOW DAILY 44 Symposium to focus on preventing pain Presbyopia correction is a hot topic in ophthalmology around the world T he Combined Symposium sponsored by the Alliance of Cataract and Refractive Specialty Societies will help you address presbyopia-re- lated challenges with an interna- tional twist. "Combined Symposia of Cataract and Refractive Societies— Presbyopia Correction: Where? When? How?" will take place Sunday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in room 134 of the Moscone Center. The Alliance of Cataract and Re- fractive Specialty Societies includes the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS), European Society of Cataract and Re- fractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and Latin American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ALACCSA- R/LASCRS). Roger F. Steinert, MD, Irvine, Calif., and Edward J. Holland, MD, Cincinnati, will moderate the sym- posium along with co-moderators Graham D. Barrett, FRACO, Peter J. Barry, MD, and William C. The Combined Symposium will bring an international field of ex- perts together to discuss evolving technologies and techniques in pres- byopia surgery and will emphasize approaches used around the world. Deborah S. Jacobs, MD, Boston, who will be moderating the session, believes that complications of surgical procedures often don't garner much attention except in passing. "This is a chance for clini- cians to learn about certain compli- cations that do occur and that can be devastating to patients," she said. During the session, Dr. Jacobs said that Audrey Talley-Rostov, MD, will talk about screening and risk factors for complications and Marguerite McDonald, MD, will emphasize perioperative pain man- agement. Deepinder Dhaliwal, MD, a refractive surgeon who is also an acupuncturist, will discuss avenues for dealing with chronic pain. In addition, naval ophthalmologist Elizabeth Hofmeister, MD, will talk about approaching pain after surface ablation. As part of the session, CLAO (Contact Lens Association of Oph- thalmologists), which is sponsoring this symposium, has selected a lec- turer for the "Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, Award." This year's honoree is Steven Wilson, MD, who is a refrac- tive surgeon and expert in corneal wound healing. "Since LASIK is a form of trauma to the cornea his re- search has some relevance," Dr. Ja- cobs said. "He particularly has some thoughts about LASIK and its link to complex regional pain syndrome." Overall, Dr. Jacobs thinks that while issues with pain are rare, they can be devastating. "So why not learn what we can about avoiding and treating them," she said. EW Editors' note: Drs. Jacobs has no finan- cial interests related to this article. Audrey Talley-Rostov, MD, will discuss screening and risk factors for complications at a refractive symposium on post-refractive surgery pain.
