EW SHOW DAILY 10 Saturday, April 20, 2013 ASCRS News Today First ASCRS/OPS symposium explores photography and the eye T here is a unique link between the human eye and photography, with the camera's mechanisms strikingly similar to the mechanisms of the eye. Imaging and the eye will be explored in the first ever symposium of the Ophthalmic Photographers' Society (OPS) at this year's ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. "The [Ophthalmic Photogra- phers' Society] is very excited about the opportunity to collaborate with ASCRS. We are looking forward to this program/symposium as the foundation to a successful relation- ship with ASCRS. And [we] hope for many more to follow," said Robert W. Cavicchi, CRA, FOPS, Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, president of OPS. "I would like to add: There is a compelling connection between this photographic discipline and our subject, the human eye, a connec- tion that goes beyond the obvious parallels between eye and camera, cornea and lens, iris and aperture, retina and film," he said. About the symposium The ASCRS/OPS symposium, "Imag- ing the Anterior Segment with the Ophthalmic Photographers' Soci- ety," will be two hours of presenta- tions covering multiple topics in ocular imaging. The topics will be presented in 10- to 15-minute incre- ments by PowerPoint presentations and video. According to Mr. Cavicchi, who will be moderating the symposium, the ASCRS/OPS collaboration has taken place since 2003, when the Society's scientific exhibit of award- winning images was first shown at the ASCRS meeting. The display was expanded to encompass the sympo- sium this year. OPS is a 44-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to specialized ocular imaging. "Our board of education, which is responsible for all OPS-sponsored educational programs, was looking for more innovative and diverse educational opportunities for our membership and thought a collabo- rative symposium with ASCRS would address that effort," Mr. Cavicchi said. The ASCRS/OPS symposium will take place today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will be held at the same time as the OPS Mid-Year Educational Program, April 19-20, at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco. Attendees of the OPS event will be shuttled to the Moscone Center on Saturday for the ASCRS/OPS symposium. Topics discussed Mr. Cavicchi said a variety of topics that include imaging the anterior segment, anterior segment OCT, and ultrasound biomicroscopy will be explored in the symposium during the ASCRS meeting. He said he is looking forward to all of the subjects slated to be dis- cussed, but is particularly interested in the following: Anterior Segment Imaging with Retinal Instruments, Imaging with the iPhone, and Gonio Photography with the RetCam (Clarity Medical Systems, Pleasanton, Calif.). "These are examples of creative solutions and innovative ideas in ophthalmic imaging," he said. "Most ophthalmic imagers are reti- nal-centric. This will be an excellent way of introducing them to another part of the eye that we are typically used to imaging through versus im- aging it."
