EW SHOW DAILY 28 by Cindy Sebrell ASCRS•ASOA Director of Public Affairs ASCRS offering new program for optometrists and ophthalmologists working in an integrated eyecare model A SCRS will offer a new nonsurgical educational program to advance an eyecare delivery model based on a synergistic collaboration between optometry and ophthalmology. The program was designed specifically to promote and advance the integrated eyecare model and will provide the opportu- nity for optometrists to earn contin- uing education credits and to attend a networking reception. The Integrated Ophthalmic- Managed Eyecare Delivery Model (IOMED) was created by the ASCRS IOMED Task Force and the ASCRS Integrated Eyecare Program Com- mittee, both of which include repre- sentatives from ophthalmology and optometry. A recent ASCRS member needs assessment survey revealed that 34% of members currently em- ploy optometrists and 38% plan to employ optometrists in the future. The IOMED model, which is endorsed by the ASCRS Executive Committee and Governing Board, encourages arrangements in which optometrists employed by ophthal- mologists, as well as optometrists employed by the military or indus- try, play a role in the delivery of nonsurgical eyecare. This patient- centered model encourages greater efficiency and coordination of care with ophthalmologists and op- tometrists working together to meet the growing demands for service and address the pending changes in Medicare and healthcare delivery, and to meet the needs of the 77 million American baby boomers nearing retirement age. The new integrated eyecare model track for optometry and ophthalmology will be offered at the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Con- gress. The IOMED track will include a special half-day program as well as identified nonsurgical courses throughout the four-day event that are beneficial for the integrated eye- care practitioner. Optometrists (ODs) can register under this category only and must certify one of the following: • Employed by an ophthalmologist • Employed by a medical school (not a college of optometry) • Employed by a managed-care provider • Employed by the military • Employed by industry/manufac- turer • Employed by a corporate center (TLC, LCA, etc.) Select courses in the IOMED track will include topics such as: management of the post-op patient; identifying risk factors for post-op LASIK ectasia; topographical analy- sis; premium IOL discussion; coman- agement; IOL power calculations; and much more. The IOMED Task Force has also launched an online job network on LinkedIn aimed to connect optometrists with ophthal- mologists working in an integrated setting.
