Rohit Shetty, MD, will close the session with "Unhappy Optics/Un- happy Patients: Optics of Refractive Surgery," an issue of practical impor- tance to all refractive surgeons. "Past, Present, and Future Options for the Correction of Presbyopia," and Sonia Yoo, MD, will present "Phakic IOL Risks and Benefits: Is the Interest Waning?" Ronald R. Krueger, MD, will present "Overview of Femtosecond Platforms: What's Best for What?" With an engineering background, Dr. Krueger began working on exci- mer laser corneal surgery in medical school and is a leading expert on laser treatment and laser technology development. Steven C. Schallhorn, MD, will provide an overview of conventional and customized ablation options in "Conventional versus Wavefront versus Topo-Guided versus Opti- mized: What's Different and What's the Same?" Ekktet Chansue, MD, and Arthur B. Cummings, MD, will "Chemical and Biological Warfare" and Capt. Anthony J. Johnson, MD, presenting "Managing War Trauma." The session will also highlight the importance of eye banking in corneal surgery, with Maria A. Woodward, MD, presenting "Cor- nea Surgery Begins in the Eye Bank: Tissue Preparation" and David B. Glasser, MD, presenting "Corneal Graft Registries." Monty M. Montoya, MBA, will present "Eye Banking in Evolution: Role of the MD." Mr. Montoya is president and CEO of SightLife, the largest and most prominent eye bank in the United States. He has played a pivotal role in advanc- ing eye banking technology and bringing eye banking capabilities to developing countries. The session will take place tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. in room 20ABC of the San Diego Convention Center. 'Refractive Surgery' "While not a pure refractive surgery meeting, the WCC recognizes the importance of refractive surgery in the corneal subspecialist practice," said Michael W. Belin, MD, pro- fessor of ophthalmology and vision science, University of Arizona, Tuc- son, the session's moderator. "While discussing many future or emerging technologies, the session will also review current modalities, such as phakic IOLs, and will address the optics of the unhappy refractive patient." This session will focus on sev- eral major topics such as presbyopia correction, intrastromal lenticule extraction, and crosslinking, and af- ford the speakers a longer time than usual to more properly develop the topics, Dr. Belin said. "I think the attendees will appreciate the longer talks in this session, which will allow for more topic development," he said. Thomas Kohnen, MD, will deliver the keynote presentation, Sessions will highlight the present and future of world health, eye banking, and refractive surgery W orld Cornea Congress VII will feature 2 ses- sions focusing on the evolution and future of corneal refractive surgery and the role of the cornea in the larger picture of global eye health. The "World Health and Eye Banking" session will give attendees a comprehensive overview of ocular health issues around the globe and the role of eyecare in the context of crisis. The "Refractive Surgery" session will focus on the major refractive surgical issues that corneal surgeons face today and directions the field might take in the future. 'World Health and Eye Banking' This session, moderated by Marian S. Macsai, MD, will focus on global ocular health issues, eye banking, and providing care in emergen- cy, disaster, or conflict situations. Paul Tambyah, MD, an infectious disease specialist from Singapore, will deliver the keynote presenta- tion titled "Emerging Pandemics." Dr. Tambyah has performed exten- sive research on hospital-acquired infections as well as the growth of antimicrobial resistant infections, 2 pressing issues facing infectious disease specialists today. Patricia Dahl will present "Emergency Disaster Preparedness" and Matt Oliva, MD, will present "Nonstandard Uses of Corneal Tissue in the Developing World." Dr. Oliva is a board member of the Himalayan Cataract Project and has worked extensively to end prevent- able cataract blindness in develop- ing countries. The topic will shift to treating patients in areas of conflict with Keith Wroblewski, MD, presenting Sessions to feature a forward-thinking perspective
