EW SHOW DAILY 14 Sunday, April 19, 2015 ASCRS News Today cell transplantation. Using videos to demonstrate techniques, this session provided attendees with the knowledge to deliver comprehen- sive DMEK patient care, including J CAHPO and ASCRS wel- comed Parag Majmudar, MD, Chicago, to the Tech- nicians and Nurses Program yesterday. Dr. Majmudar's course, "DMEK: Next Advance in Corneal Transplantation," discussed Descemet's membrane endothe- lial keratoplasty (DMEK) as the latest advancement in endothelial patient selection and postoperative management. While a more compli- cated surgery, DMEK offers a much faster patient rehabilitation, and studies show it may provide better final visual acuity and a lower rate of corneal graft rejection. Dr. Majmudar is a fellowship -trained corneal and refractive sur- gery specialist and a member of the Chicago Cornea Consultants team. An active participant in clinical research activities, Dr. Majmudar is a highly regarded lecturer and instruc- tor on the subjects of corneal and refractive surgery. When asked why he became an ophthalmologist, Dr. Majmudar said: Spotlight on a speaker "Originally I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. Growing up as a sports fanatic in New Jersey, my dream was to be the team surgeon for the New York Giants. During my first year in medical school, I was selected to participate in orthopedic research and clinical activities, but by the end of the year, I was not sold on the subspecialty. During my second year in medical school, I was a research fellow for Verinder Nirankari, MD, a clinical professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He was investigating the outcomes of epikeratopha- kia for aphakia, and the project got me hooked on refractive surgery, long before surgeons began using the term." Dr. Majmudar is the author of more than 20 peer-reviewed pub- lications and 6 book chapters, and currently serves as an associate professor of ophthalmology at Rush University in Chicago. Dr. Majmudar has 3 private practices in Illinois, where he specializes in laser and non-laser vision correction procedures, cataract surgery, kerato- conus, and complications stemming from refractive surgery. Dr. Majmudar is an active mem- ber of the American Society of Cat- aract & Refractive Surgery as well as the American Academy of Ophthal- mology, where he recently received the Academy's Senior Achievement Award. He is an International Coun- cil Representative from the United States for the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
