EW SHOW DAILY 14 Saturday, May 7, 2016 ASCRS News Today Dr. Cionni: The changes in our health care system will be one of ASCRS' biggest challenges over the upcoming years. Beyond ASCRS' primary mission of educating our members, ASCRS will be extremely busy helping to educate our legisla- tors and influence legislative deci- sions to ensure that these changes will improve our ability to provide excellent eyecare. Additionally, as innovations are constantly coming about in the world of eyecare, ASCRS will need to continue exploring and expanding on education options for our members. EyeWorld: How will you con- tinue to stay active in ASCRS? Dr. Cionni: I have been an active ASCRS member for nearly 30 years and plan to remain active. As the outgoing president, I will still be involved in planning and decision-making for this great organization. EW and focus groups to be certain that the education is geared to what our members truly need. EyeWorld: What are some other big picture issues that ASCRS has worked on over the past year? Dr. Cionni: ASCRS and ASOA have been very active in advocacy, helping our government leaders to make sound decisions that ultimate- ly will help our patients receive the best care and allow our practices to survive in the uncertain world of health care in the U.S. Additionally, the ASCRS Foundation has increased its effort nationally and internation- ally to help provide much needed eyecare and education to those in need. EyeWorld: Over the next couple of years, what do you think will be the biggest challenges and opportunities for ASCRS and for ophthalmologists? by Vanessa Caceres EyeWorld Contributing Writer the most advanced techniques in his field. Dr. Cionni recently spoke with EyeWorld about accomplishments and highlights from the past year. EyeWorld: What do you per- ceive as ASCRS' biggest accom- plishments in the past year? Dr. Cionni: The primary mission of ASCRS is to educate our members in order to promote the delivery of state-of-the-art eyecare. Over the past year, ASCRS has provided a vast wealth of educational opportunities through our annual meeting, nu- merous regional meetings, webinars, and online educational opportuni- ties. Importantly, this education has been guided by our member surveys I n his year as ASCRS president, Robert Cionni, MD, said that he and the organization have focused on bolstering targeted education for members and pro- viding advocacy for causes import- ant to ophthalmologists. Dr. Cionni is a world-renowned expert in the field of cataract surgery and medical director of The Eye Institute of Utah, Salt Lake City.
