EW SHOW DAILY 60 ASCRS Symposia by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Staff Writer for adenovirus conjunctivitis, and optical coherence tomography to map corneal epithelial thickness. Courses on Tuesday will include imaging techniques for keratoconus diagnosis and progression tracking and the situations that might merit endothelial keratoplasty, both taking place from 8:00–9:30 a.m. These will be followed by a course in Russian on new surgical technologies and devices from 9:30–11:00 a.m. Dr. Kim will lead a 10:00–11:00 a.m. course on the use of adhesive and sealant products in anterior segment surgery. Two 1:00–2:30 p.m. courses will wrap up cornea offerings for the meeting. One, a hands-on and video-based course, will cover pre-Descemet's endothelial kera- toplasty (PDEK) graft preparation techniques. The other, a clinical case and video-based course, will show how DALK, DMEK, and keratolimbal allograft (KLAL) can be performed with tissue from a single donor. EW F rom the newest techniques for keratoconus to treat- ment of ectasia to kera- toplasty procedures, the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress will offer symposia, instructional courses, and paper ses- sions for general ophthalmologists and corneal specialists. Today The ASCRS Cornea Clinical Com- mittee is sponsoring the sympo- sium "Pardon the Ophthalmology: Hot Topics in Cornea and External Disease" moderated by Edward Holland, MD, and Terry Kim, MD, from 3:00–4:30 p.m. This symposium will include interactive discussion between the panel and the audience regarding common to complex corneal cases. Instructional courses will feature topics including basic to advanced deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), lead by Vincenzo Sarnicola, MD, as well as new frontiers in this procedure led by Enrica Sarnicola, MD, from 1:00–2:30 p.m. and 3:00–4:30 p.m., respectively. Also from 3:00–4:30 p.m., Roy Rubinfeld, MD, will instruct in transepithelial and epi- off corneal collagen crosslinking for keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. A paper session from 1:00–2:35 p.m. will cover Descemet's mem- brane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), DALK, and penetrating keratoplas- ty (PK), including outcomes of the safety-basket suture technique, inci- dence of graft rejection after steroid discontinuation, a new water-pillow technique for harvesting donor De- scemet's membrane and endotheli- um, and outcomes after limbal stem cell transplants. A DMEK-specific paper session from 3:00–4:30 p.m. will highlight hemi-DMEK, outcomes of DMEK in previous glaucoma surgery patients, corneal astigmatism with DMEK, and the procedure's learning curve. Sunday, May 8 Instruction starts off at 8:00 a.m. with a course led by Edwin Chen, MD, for the beginner to interme- diate DSEK/Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) surgeon wishing to learn more about prevention and man- agement of postoperative compli- cations. At the same time, a course on use of the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay (ReVision Optics, Lake Forest, California), including Food and Drug Administration clinical trial results, will be led by Stephen Lane, MD. Physicians hoping to learn about techniques that could shorten the learning curve and help avoid complications in DMEK might con- sider the course at 1:00–2:30 p.m., followed by a DMEK step-by-step course from 3:00–4:30 p.m. A paper session starting at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday—"Keratoconus: Intra Corneal Rings (ICR)"—will include topics like use of an intra- corneal circular ring compared to a 340-degree ICR as well as femtosec- ond laser-assisted ICR implantation for irregular astigmatism and the characteristics of microbial keratitis after ICR implantation. Monday, May 9 Kick off Monday with either a course on keratoconus treatments or a video-based course on endothelial keratoplasty, both from 8:00–9:30 a.m. A course describing techniques for low complication rates in DMEK taught by Michael Straiko, MD, will be held from 1:00–2:30 p.m. Courses taking place at 3:00– 4:30 p.m. include one on the use of surgical adhesives and amniotic membranes and an interactive video course on surgical procedures that can occur in a minor treatment room. Paper session topics for the day include "Dry Eye—Diagnosis and Treatment" from 8:00–9:30 a.m., "Keratoconus—CXL" from 1:00–2:30 p.m., and "Corneal Repair and Kera- toprosthesis" from 3:00–4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 The last day of programming starts off with a paper session from 8:00– 9:30 a.m. on infectious keratitis, fea- turing topics like confocal scanning microscopy, amniotic membrane transplantation, using an argon laser as a therapy for infected ulcers, and the Chikungunya virus. "Conjunctival Disease and Corneal Imaging," a paper session from 10:00–11:30 a.m., will include presentations on the comorbidity of dry eye and ocular allergies, testing Highlights of cornea sessions you won't want to miss Dr. Holland and Dr. Kim moderate the "Pardon the Ophthalmology: Hot Topics in Cornea and External Disease" session at the 2015 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. The 2016 symposium will be held today from 3:00–4:30 p.m. Monday, May 9 A paper session from 1:00–2:30 p.m. will cover surgical techniques and trabeculotomy for glaucoma pa- tients. Topics will include amniotic membrane-umbilical cord com- pared to pericardium patch grafts in preventing tube exposure, how phacoemulsification parameters in cataract surgery can reduce IOP, and outcomes of gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy. A course specifically for ante- rior segment surgeons wishing to learn about MIGS and trabecular micro-bypass stents will take place from 3:00–4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 Glaucoma offerings on this last day of the meeting will include 2 cours- es. "Tackling Neovascular Glauco- ma," led by Darby Miller, MD, will run from 8:00–9:30 a.m., covering everything from how to recognize this condition to how to manage it. The final glaucoma course from 10:00–11:30 a.m. with instructor Ahmad Khalil, MD, will present options for how to manage a patient with both cataract and glaucoma. This course will include MIGS tech- niques, surgical videos, and interac- tive discussion. EW continued from page 58 Saturday, May 7, 2016
