EW SHOW DAILY 30 Saturday, May 7, 2016 ASCRS News Today Y esterday, the Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) brought an exciting ses- sion to the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. "Train the Trainer" focused on the practical skills and real-life strategies needed to create and deliver effective, en- gaging training to new ophthalmic hires in an ophthalmic environ- ment. The course helped practices start technician training programs and refine the techniques they are already using. Attendees learned to train with impact by assessing their own training style and evaluating the learner, the trainer, and the training course. This session included lectures and a moderated panel of 4 speakers with years of training experience. Topics included identifying a good trainer, matching learning styles and training methods, using effective training techniques, developing a ATPO's Train the Trainer delivers practical skills for new ophthalmic hires T his year's ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress will once again include special programming for residents, fellows, and ophthalmolo- gists in their first 5 years of practice. Under the Young Eye Surgeon (YES) umbrella, the following symposia and special events will be geared toward residents, fellows, and young ophthalmologists: • Challenging Video Cases for the Young Eye Surgeon, sponsored by the YES Clinical Committee; today, 1:00–2:30 p.m., Great Hall B and C • Phaco Fundamentals: Modifying & Advancing Machine Settings Young surgeons can say "YES" to targeted sessions at ASCRS systematic approach, and evaluating the success of training methods. Practical examples and useful train- ing resources were provided. Time was allotted for questions at the end of the session. ATPO also held certification exam review sessions yesterday for the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmolo- gy (JCAHPO) Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthal- mic Technician (COT), and Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) written exams. These are a great resource for technicians preparing to take the next step in their careers. These sessions serve as an overview of content areas covered on the certification exam- ination to help the attendee prepare for the exam. Content areas were discussed in a classroom format with the use of a slide presentation, and the session ended with a question and answer period.
