EW SHOW DAILY 54 ASCRS Symposia by Vanessa Caceres EyeWorld Contributing Writer No shortage of interesting topics in ASCRS symposia S ymposia at the annual meeting today will help attendees with a variety of clinical challenges. All sessions are held in the convention center. "Challenging Video Cases for the Young Surgeon" will feature difficult and challenging surgical video cases pertaining to cataract/ intraocular lens/iris and refractive surgery, to highlight basic concepts and fundamentals for the begin- ning surgeon. The panel will discuss how they would handle each case, including their personal surgical approach, while providing tips and pearls particularly relevant for young surgeons. Sponsored by the ASCRS Young Eye Surgeons Clinical Committee, the symposium will be held from 1:00–2:30 p.m. in Great Hall B and C. "Intravitreal Injections: The How, What, When and Why" will cover how to prep and what to inject, optical coherence tomog- raphy (OCT)-guided treatment, and complications of intravitreal injections. Sponsored by the Retina Clinical Committee, the symposium takes place from 1:00–2:30 p.m. today in room 255–257. Sponsored jointly by ASCRS and the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), "New Technology from the Old World" will discuss a variety of devices and studies. Topics will include iris clip IOLs, the use of intraoperative OCT, topography-guided crosslinking, and more. The symposium will be held from 1:00–2:30 p.m. in room 243. "Pardon the Ophthalmology: Hot Topics in Cornea and External Disease" is an ever-popular session where common and advanced cor- neal cases will be presented to the panel and audience for lively and interactive discussion with regard to management and treatment. It's sponsored by the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee, and takes place from 3:00–4:30 p.m. in Great Hall A and D. For those interested in a ses- sion in Spanish, "Management of Complicated Cases in Cataract and Refractive Surgery" will be held from 3:00–5:00 p.m. in Great Hall B and C. Sponsored by ALACCSA-R and presented in Spanish, speakers will discuss indications, techniques, strategies, and solutions related to complications in cataract and refractive surgery. An expert interna- tional group of surgeons will share their personal experiences through videos, panel discussion, and inter- active debates. "Survive or Thrive in the Modern Healthcare Environment: Clinical Changes to Practice" will focus on ways to grow a practice. Topics include integrated eyecare, dry eye centers of excellence, elec- tronic medical records, oculoplastics, and more. The symposium takes place from 3:00–4:30 p.m. in room 255–257. "From an Idea to FDA Approval: Efficiency in the FDA Process" will focus on drug and device combina- tion products, how they are regulat- ed, and how to get them approved. Specifically, the symposium will ad- dress drug and device combination products for age-related macular de- generation, glaucoma, and allergies. It will also cover physician-spon- sored Investigational New Drugs (INDs), regarding when they are a good idea and how to apply. The ses- sion takes place from 3:00–4:30 p.m. in room 243 and is sponsored by the ASCRS FDA Committee. All you have to do is attend the Combined Symposium of Cataract and Refractive Societies (CSCRS) on Sunday morning, sponsored by the Alliance of Cataract and Refractive Specialty Societies. The symposium will bring an international field of experts together to discuss the "Best of Previous CSCRS Meetings." The best presentations from the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (APACRS), the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and the Latin American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ALACCSA-R/ LASCRS) will be presented and dis- cussed. This session will emphasize the various techniques and tech- nologies being pursued in different regions of the world.
