EW SHOW DAILY 8 Sunday, May 8, 2016 ASCRS News Today by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer The Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology and 60 Minutes sessions are not to be missed T he Sunday Summit will take place today from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will consist of 2 parts, the Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology and the 60 Minutes session. "Every year we pick a non-oph- thalmologist to give a talk in science and medicine or technology that would be interesting to our audi- ence," said ASCRS Program Chair Edward Holland, MD, Cincinnati. This year, the lecturer is Kevin Pho, MD, a health care social media leader. He is a national media commentator and co-author of the book Establishing, Managing, and Protecting Your Online Reputation: the popular news show. This year's session will focus on international trends in anterior segment surgery, with 4 speakers from around the world highlighting different topics. Rudy Nuijts, MD, Maastricht, the Netherlands, will give an overview of a multicenter trial by the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) on the prevention of macular edema after cataract surgery. "This is a very large pivotal trial that could potentially change the way we prevent and manage CME," Dr. Holland said. Miguel Srur, MD, Santiago, Chile, will highlight some of the latest trends in cataract surgery in Latin America, while Donald Tan, MD, Singapore, will focus on updates in the latest innovations in corneal transplantation surgery in his presentation. There have been a number of remarkable changes in this field in the last several years, Dr. Holland said, and Dr. Tan is leading this innovation. He will discuss the Asia-Pacific region in particular. Finally, ASCRS President Kerry Solomon, MD, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, will give his views on where multifocal IOLs are trend- ing in the U.S. This is the third year of the 60 Minutes session at the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress, and Dr. Holland said that it provides an interesting format to deliver infor- mation to attendees. "It has to be about education," Dr. Holland said, "but there are many ways you can package the information to provide the highest quality education possi- ble." Sunday Summit to address social media and international trends A Social Media Guide for Physicians and Medical Practices. He is also a practicing physician who received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Pho's lecture is titled "Con- nect and Be Heard: Make a Differ- ence in Health Care with Social Media." The lecture will feature tips and Dr. Pho's perspective as a board-certified internal medicine physician and social media leader. "It will cover the importance of defining your online presence as a physician in today's environment," Dr. Holland said, noting that he expects this topic to appeal partic- ularly to younger physicians. He added that those who are not as familiar with social media could find it helpful as well to discover a new approach to their online presence. The second portion of the Sunday Summit is the 60 Minutes session, modeled after the format of
