EW SHOW DAILY 42 Sunday, May 8, 2016 Meeting Reporter by EyeWorld staff Program to discuss keys to success with toric IOLs, focusing on preoperative diagnostics and planning T omorrow morning, Richard Lindstrom, MD, will lead a symposium on pearls for success with toric IOLs, em- phasizing the importance of accurate preoperative measure- ments and planning. The program is titled "Astigmatism Management & Toric IOLs: The Path to Surgical Success with Preoperative Measures and Advanced Diagnostic Tools," and the faculty includes John Berdahl, MD, John Vukich, MD, Bonnie Henderson, MD, and Douglas Koch, MD. The program is part of a new ASCRS and EyeWorld initiative to provide education targeted at spe- cific learning objectives driven from the 2015 ASCRS Clinical Survey. This program will discuss the impor- tance of best practices for obtaining accurate preoperative measurements with advanced diagnostics as well as the magnitude and pattern of astigmatism to achieve positive outcomes in the management of astigmatism in cataract patients with toric IOLs. The expert faculty will discuss how to identify the opti- mal therapeutic target for residual cylinder that should be part of best practices in the management of astigmatism with toric IOLs. The symposium is designed to maximize key takeaways for the intended audience: physicians who are interested in driving greater adoption and maximizing outcomes with toric IOLs. Additional EyeWorld educational events throughout 2016 will focus on intraoperative and postoperative management to help ensure ASCRS members have a va- riety of focused education resources available. This EyeWorld CME sympo- sium will take place in La Nouvelle Ballroom ABC tomorrow morning. Registration will start at 6:00 a.m., and the program will start at 6:30 a.m. This program is supported by educational grants from Abbott Medical Optics and Alcon. Onsite registration is available. EW Surgical success with toric IOLs by Beth Marsh EyeWorld program's dynamic content will provide physicians information on improving cataract surgery outcomes and exceeding expectations T oday, Richard Lindstrom, MD, will lead an EyeWorld CME symposium on im- proving cataract surgery outcomes by eliminating inflammation and pain postoper- atively. The faculty includes Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Edward Holland, MD, Terry Kim, MD, and Francis Mah, MD. These physicians are recognized as top thought leaders in the country. The program, "Advanced Thera- peutic & Surgical Options to Elim- inate Post-Cataract Surgery Inflam- mation and Pain," will highlight recent advancements in therapy and surgical techniques that can help mitigate inflammation, eliminate pain, and reduce ultrasound energy. Attendees of the program will: • Review the latest advancements in anti-inflammatory therapy • Understand the changing dy- namic and use of intraoperative anti-inflammatory agents • Learn more about femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery tech- niques to improve outcomes and decrease inflammation postop • Hear about new products in the pipeline designed to improve patient compliance and surgical outcomes • Understand which comorbid con- ditions, surgical considerations, and concomitant medications may influence inflammation • Review clinical data supporting a pulse dosing regimen resulting in decreased corneal edema • Review clinical data regarding postoperative pain and how it was the most significant predictor of patients' dissatisfaction with their care • Understand the similarities and differences between the available brand-name and generic pharma- ceutical options • Review published literature on femtosecond laser impact on inflammation and ultrasound energy levels • Hear panel recommendations for the most appropriate pre- and postop inflammation treatment regimen Patient needs are changing. Cataract and especially refractive cataract patients are working, in- dependent, using cell phones and computers, and need good function- al vision as quickly as possible. Their expectations are high—they expect to see clearly on day 1 and have no pain. The impact of postoperative pain and inflammation is a sig- nificant variable. During surgery, surgeons can employ techniques to decrease ultrasound energy con- sumption and utilize intraoperative anti-inflammatories that will impact their ability to mitigate and even eliminate postoperative inflamma- tion. Data from the 2015 ASCRS Clinical Survey will be shared at the symposium. The large annual membership survey conducted in April 2015 assessed clinical opinions and practice patterns from more than 2,000 unique respondents. Most agreed inflammation has a significant impact on the variability of visual acuity and quality results (85%), visual recovery time (92%), and patient comfort and satisfaction (92%). This program will include personal experiences and published results on how to address these key areas. This EyeWorld CME sympo- sium will take place in La Nouvelle Ballroom ABC. Registration begins at 4:45 p.m., and the program starts at 5:15 p.m. This program is supported by unrestricted grants from Alcon (Fort Worth, Texas), Bausch + Lomb (Bridgewater, New Jersey), Imprimis (San Diego), Omeros (Seattle), and Ocular Therapeutix (Bedford, Massachusetts). Onsite registration is available. EW Eliminating post-cataract surgery inflammation and pain The program will highlight recent advancements in therapy and surgical techniques that can help mitigate inflammation, eliminate pain, and reduce ultrasound energy.
