EW SHOW DAILY 52 Sunday, May 8, 2016 Meeting Reporter +2.5]," Dr. Mackool said. The only drawback is nighttime glare in some patients, which is why Dr. Mackool will insert the lens in the nondomi- nant eye first, just in case there is an issue. Dr. Mackool shared that his touchup rate with other ReSTOR lenses is 15%; when he tracked the touchup rate in 50 cases with the +2.5 IOL, the rate was about the same. However, none of those patients wanted enhancements because they were pleased with the lens. Data from Alcon that will be published later this year in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Sur- gery found that the use of ORA and VerifEye increased the percentage of patients who reached their achieved intended target by 12.6%, according to information shared at the session. When asked about mixing IOL types, such as a monofocal and mul- tifocal, Dr. Mackool said he would prefer to see a large study with outcomes. "You have to choose your patients carefully. You can't have uptight patients in that situation, or they'll drive you crazy," Dr. Mackool said. This is an area that involves the art of medicine and a frank discus- sion with patients about pros and cons of each lens type, Dr. Mackool said. When Dr. Jones performed live surgery on a 69-year-old female, a small anterior tear occurred. He and the fellow participants discussed management of the tear and how the technology can help surgeons better manage unanticipated occur- rences. John Berdahl, MD, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Bonnie Henderson, MD, Boston, also par- ticipated in the program. Terry Kim, MD, Durham, North Carolina, mod- erated the program, and Stephen Lane, MD, Stillwater, Minnesota, moderated the debates. EW Editors' note: This event was sponsored by Alcon. by Vanessa Caceres EyeWorld Contributing Writer even if you're not sure they will choose a premium option, should be part of the full disclosure and informed consent process, Dr. Yeu said. Lasering in on live surgery The session interweaved the debates and discussion with live surgery performed in Swansea, Illinois, by Michael Jones, MD, Swansea, Nicholas Batra, MD, San Leandro, California, and Richard Mackool, MD, Astoria, New York. The surger- ies featured a discussion of astigma- tism management and showcased Alcon technology such as ORA with VerifEye and the LenSx laser. Par- ticipants discussed the value of the newer +2.5 D IOL, which has a 0.94 central "button" diameter versus 0.86 of a +3.0 D IOL. "The concern we have about giving up distance vision is not a concern [with the precision, control, and reproducibili- ty with the LenSx laser. Another debate focused on a preloaded disposable IOL deliv- ery system and if such a system is superior to manual IOL delivery. "The system is very easy. It's right there for you," said Brandon Ayres, MD, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. He said that sterilization is easier with the use of a preloaded IOL delivery system. On the other hand—"Show me the studies. I haven't seen studies on this yet," Dr. Davidson said. Another concern with preloaded IOL delivery systems would be having to stock extra inventory, Dr. Davidson added. Elizabeth Yeu, MD, Norfolk, Virginia, and Don Serafano, MD, Long Beach, California, discussed the value of informing patients of all presbyopic IOL options. Presenting patients with all of their options, A Saturday morning session sponsored by Alcon (Fort Worth, Texas) shined a spotlight on astigmatism management and featured 3 live cataract surgeries. "Astigmatism Management: Building Your Bridge to Cataract Refractive Surgery" featured sever- al debates, commentary, and live surgeries, all focused on instrumen- tation and technology from Alcon that are used in cataract surgery and astigmatism management. One "debate" centered on the advantages of femtosecond laser- assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) over manual cataract surgery. John Davidson, MD, Ventura, California, said his just-published study in Oph- thalmic Review included an analysis of 41 peer-review articles about FLACS with use of the LenSx laser (Alcon). His analysis found better Making astigmatism management easier with new surgical tools Dr. Yeu and Dr. Berdahl participate in a discussion of astigmatism management during cataract surgery.
