EW T his year's ASCRS FDA Symposium, sponsored by the ASCRS FDA Commit- tee, will focus on the use of off-label medications. "Off-Label Drugs for Anterior Seg- ment Surgery: What Can I Use and How Can I Stay Out of Trouble?" will address the prevalence and uses of off-label drugs and devices in ophthalmology. David F. Chang, MD, Los Altos, California, will dis- cuss the conundrum that ophthal- mologists face regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for cataract surgery. The issues that limit patient access and physician education include restric- tions on off-label promotion of top- ical antibiotic prophylaxis, barriers to U.S. Food and Drug Administra- tion (FDA) approval of commercial intracameral antibiotic formulations for prophylaxis, off-label intracam- eral use of topical antibiotics, and increasingly strict oversight and regulations governing compounding pharmacies. Doyle Stulting, MD, Atlanta, will walk attendees through the history of the regulatory environ- ment and will discuss innovative ways to ensure providers have access to truthful and scientifically accurate information. Charles Leiter, PharmD, San Jose, California, will discuss the more recent issues surrounding com- pounding pharmacies. Wiley Chambers, MD, Wash- ington, D.C., will provide a regula- tory perspective from the FDA on FDA symposium to cover off-label drugs for anterior segment surgery by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer Monday Crosslinking will be the topic of a Monday morning symposium from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. "Practical Pearls for Starting a Corneal Collagen Crosslinking Practice" will cover incorporating crosslinking into your practice, which patients to treat, diagnostics, and other con- siderations. "Corneal Ectasia: Battle of the Bulge," will take place from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. The session will touch on keratoconus-related topics and will also include the Richard L. Lindstrom, MD Lecture. Instruc- tional courses on Monday will cover endothelial keratoplasty and the cur- rent state of corneal crosslinking. A paper session on dry eye disease and infectious keratitis will take place from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday On the final day of the meeting, there will be several cornea sessions, including paper sessions on DMEK; limbal stem cell transplant, corne- al storage, and keratoplasty; and keratoconus, OCT, and transplant techniques. Instructional courses will cover "Strategic Prevention and Management of Common Intraop- erative and Postoperative Complica- tions for the Beginning and Inter- mediate DSEK/DSAEK Surgeons" and "Keratoprosthesis: New Models, Advances, and Challenges." EW S everal cornea paper ses- sions and instructional courses will take place today. A paper session from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. will highlight DALK and ocular surface disease, while EK and DMEK as well as Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) will be high- lighted in a paper session from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. An instructional course from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. is titled "Corneal Crosslinking: Indications, Applica- tions, Results, Complications, and Evolving Technology." This course will be led by Ioanna Kontari, MD, and A. John Kanellopoulos, MD, and will look at the surgical treat- ment options for progressive corneal ectasia associated with keratoconus and refractive surgery. Another course from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. is "Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplas- ty: From Basic to Advanced," with instructor Vincenzo Sarnicola, MD. Also today from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. is a symposium sponsored by the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee called "Cornea Family Feud." Sunday On Sunday, the Cornea Society- sponsored symposium "Decision Making in Corneal Transplantation: Case-Based Presentations" will take place from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. The session will feature presentations on a variety of topics, including management of corneal edema, management of corneal ectasia, and management of corneal opacifica- tion and graft failure. An afternoon symposium from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. asks "Common Dilemmas in Corneal and Cataract Refractive Surgery: What Would You Do?" It will examine scenarios of patients with corneal, cataract, and refractive issues. Several instruction- al courses on Sunday will high- light DMEK, including "Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty – Techniques for Success," "DMEK from D to K: Step-by-Step Approach to Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty," "DMEK – Advanced Surgical Techniques and Surgical Pearls," and "Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty Challeng- es." A paper session from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. will focus on keratoco- nus and crosslinking, highlighting papers on epi-on, epi-off, long-term results, and other crosslinking-relat- ed topics.
