"Last year's race [in New Orle-
ans] drew almost 400 runners. They
ranged from serious, accomplished
racers to casual joggers and walkers,"
Mr. Bell said. "All are welcome, and
all seem to enjoy spending time
with friends and colleagues—and
taking a short break from the busy
meeting to get some exercise."
This year's race will be conve-
niently hosted downtown at the Los
Angeles Convention Center and will
include music along with an emcee
and warm-up team who will loosen
up and enliven the crowd. Welcom-
ing remarks and warm-up events
start at 6:10 a.m. with runners on
their marks by 6:30 a.m. Medals will
be awarded to the top finishers, but
Mr. Bell emphasized how this event
is really about having fun and sup-
porting the ASCRS Foundation.
"Runners of all levels take part,
and all contribute to the more im-
portant goal of advancing humani-
tarian eyecare," he said.
The race is open to ASCRS
delegates, their families, and citizens
in the Los Angeles area. Participants
receive a T-shirt with their $35
registration. Transportation will be
provided to ASCRS attendees from
select hotels.

"All proceeds from the race go
to support the Foundation's ongoing
humanitarian initiatives in Ethiopia
and the United States," said Don
Bell, ASCRS chief operating officer,
who oversees the ASCRS Foun-
dation. "The race is a fun way to
support Foundation programs that
extend the benefits of ophthalmolo-
gy to needy patient populations that
are unable to afford or access care on
their own."
Domestically, the foundation's
charitable cataract surgery program,
Operation Sight, has delivered more
than 850 free surgeries to needy
Americans. Abroad, the Robert
Sinskey Eye Institute in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, saw more than 22,000 pa-
tients last year, with more expected
in the coming year.
