The EyeWorld CME program will discuss means to
provide presbyopic patients with the appropriate
technology to meet their visual needs
recting technology to the patient's
specific needs. The faculty includes
Robert Cionni, MD, Steven Dell,
MD, and Vance Thompson, MD.
Patient needs are changing. Cat-
aract and refractive cataract patients
are working, independent, using cell
phones and computers, and need
good functional vision. Therefore,
their expectations are high. This pro-
gram is focused on differentiating
the stages of presbyopia progression
and means to communicate this
process with patients. The faculty
has also prepared an interactive case
discussion on pairing presbyopic
treatment solutions to match the
stage of presbyopia and patients'
specific visual needs.
The program is part of a new
ASCRS and EyeWorld initiative to
provide educational initiatives tar-
geted at specific learning objectives
driven from the 2016 ASCRS Clinical
Survey. The symposium is designed
to maximize key takeaways for the
intended audience: physicians who
are interested in improving their
ability to discuss presbyopia as a
progressive disease and providing
presbyopia correction options to
meet various types of patient needs.
Exciting data from the ASCRS
Clinical Survey will be shared. The
large annual membership survey
completed in May 2016 assessed
clinical opinions and practice pat-
terns from more than 1,500 unique
respondents. In fact, the 2016
ASCRS Clinical Survey found more
than half of respondents implant
5% or less of their cataract patients
with presbyopia-correcting IOLs.
One of the reasons for this may be
the lack of confidence physicians
have with current technology to
deliver high quality outcomes at all
three distances and pairing the pres-
byopia-correcting lens to patients'
needs. This program will provide
personal experiences and recom-
mendations on how to address these
key areas.
This EyeWorld CME symposium
will take place in West Hall B today.
Registration and lunch will take
place at 11:45 a.m., with the one-
hour program from 12:15–1:15 p.m.
This program is supported by unre-
stricted grants from Abbott Medical
Optics (Abbott Park, Illinois), Alcon
(Fort Worth, Texas), and Carl Zeiss
Meditec (Jena, Germany). Onsite
registration is available. EW
