9 EW SHOW DAILY 2018 ASCRS•ASOA Annual Meeting, Washington, D.C. by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Staff Writer Festival "the bards of our field." Their storytelling, he said, is critical to ophthalmology in that it can show the human side of it. "I have a problem, I need to know how to fix it, here is my solu- tion, and I'm going to bare myself in a video," Dr. Tauber said. This year, 130 videos from 29 countries were submitted for the judge's consideration. Eligible films, which are 8 minutes or less, are judged for applicability/educational value, originality, scientific content/ validity, clarity, cinematic quality, and artistic effects. "For the Film Festival, my passion is to make it so that people want to come to be able to exchange ideas. They want to be able to see it, to learn in a way that they are enter- tained. They want to be able to have access to these videos at home, share them with colleagues who couldn't make it to the meeting," Dr. Tauber said, adding that he looks forward to seeing, "What's the next Yamane? What's the next device that we must have that we talk to the manufactur- ers, talk to the federal government, and say that this is important be- cause it will make our patients' lives better?" EW provide an easy transfer of educa- tion that can be watched over and over again. Dr. Tauber called those who create and submit films to the Film the judges convened to watch the films, choosing a winner and runner up in the categories of Cataract/Im- plant Surgery, Glaucoma, In-house Productions, Instruments/Devices/ IOLs, New Techniques, Quality Teaching, Refractive/Cornea Surgery, Cataract Complications, and Special Interest. Two films from these cate- gories are recognized as the "Best of the Best," and a grand prize overall winner is also selected. Dr. Tauber said the best overall winner is a film that "makes you say, I'm going to take an idea from the [2018 ASCRS•ASOA Annual Meet- ing], and I'm going to somehow find a way to implement it." For example, the grand prize winner from 2016—"Transcon- junctival Intrascleral IOL Fixation with Double-Needle Technique," a form of sutureless IOL fixation that cauterizes the ends of the haptics to hold them in place in the sclera, pioneered by Shin Yamane, MD, Yokohama, Japan—was transforma- tive, Dr. Tauber said. After seeing Dr. Yamane's video, Dr. Tauber said he immediately took it back to his prac- tice, contacted Dr. Yamane to learn the nuances, and began practicing the technique. Unlike textbooks and published papers, which can take months to years to reach doctors, these videos Film Festival facilitates exchange of ideas and transfer of education T he 36th ASCRS Film Festival is under new leadership this year with Shachar Tauber, MD, Springfield, Mis- souri, taking the helm as chairman. When Richard Hoffman, MD, Eugene, Oregon, asked him to come on board as a judge 4 years ago, Dr. Tauber said he found the process and the films "evoked a passion in me."
