10 | EYEWORLD DAILY NEWS | APRIL 22, 2022 ASCRS ANNUAL MEETING DAILY NEWS Dr. McCabe said it's important to talk about image quality—how you measure it, how does it influence your plan for refractive surgery, and the different ways for trying to improve it based on patients' desires and ocular health. "This program is an opportunity for refractive surgeons to take their practice to the next level beyond the conventional thinking of Snellen visual acuity to maximizing visual quality across a variety of refractive modali- ties," Dr. McCabe said. T his year's Refractive Day has the overarching theme of boosting refractive image quality and the importance of this. Vance Thompson, MD, said that he expects the program to be "one of the most exciting." This theme highlights one of the main goals surgeons have to satisfy patients by optimizing their image quality. "Being a refractive cataract surgeon who approaches it from a refractive surgeon's perspective and values image quality, I'm excited," Dr. Thompson said. The program will cover measuring and quantifying image quality, as well as factors like the tear film and epithelium. "The program will feature a won- derful group of speakers and topics and a lot of didactic and case-based learning, as well as expert panel dis- cussions," Dr. Thompson said, adding that he is looking forward to the focus on image quality because "it's not just about hitting 20/20." Cathleen McCabe, MD, also spoke about the importance of image qual- ity and how to look beyond Snellen visual acuity. The quality of vision can vary, even if the visual acuity measures 20/20, she said. This year, the Steinert Lecture will be given by Roberto Zaldivar, MD. He will talk about phakic IOL advance- ments and his involvement with the ICL, Dr. McCabe said, adding that this will be a great opportunity for the audience to learn about that journey and to apply these lessons to their own practice. Preview of this year's Refractive Day Certified Eyecare Professional (CEP) is a newly developed, innovative eLearning program practices can use to accelerate employee onboarding and help staff build a successful career in eyecare.
