EW SHOW DAILY 46 E ducating patients about the possibilities of fem- tosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and refrac- tive lens options is key to adoption of the new technology, a physician said, because patients often are interested in new possibili- ties but do not always know about the technology or why it is helpful. "It's not effective to give patients the wrong option," said Vance Thompson, MD, Sioux Falls, S.D. "The simpler my message has become, the higher my conversion rate." Dr. Thompson spoke at the EyeWorld CME Education event "Adopting the Next Generation of Cataract Surgery: Evolving the Perspective on Outcomes, Practice Patterns, and What it Means to be a Refractive Cataract Surgeon Today." He was one of several speakers at the meeting who shared their personal experience with femtosecond laser- assisted cataract surgery, including pearls and tips for factors like patient education. Dr. Thompson said he begins the patient education process by telling patients about what he calls their "reading lens" and explains in layman terms what accommodation is, and why they must wear reading glasses after they reach their 40s. That is the first issue with their lenses, he tells patients: Their natu- ral lens has become "stiff" as they age. The second issue he addresses is that "Your lens is now cloudy, blurring your vision. It has become a cataract."
