T
he well-attended "Live
Cataract Surgery" held on
Saturday morning featured
surgeons
using femtosec-
ond laser refractive cataract
surgery technology from Alcon
(Fort Worth, Texas).
Attendees got to watch four sur-
geons
performing live femtosecond
cataract surgery at the Main Line
Surgery Center in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.,
with onsite surgeons commenting
on
the procedures. Surgeons used
Alcon's Verion Image Guided
System, LenSx Laser, LuxOR LX3,
and the Centurion Vision System.
This
is the fourth year that
Alcon has shown femto cataract
technology via live surgery at the
ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Con-
gress. Since the LenSx Laser was first
used in 2008, there have now been
325,000 surgeries performed with it,
said moderator Donald N. Serafano,
MD, Los Alamitos, Calif.
The
session featured surgeries
performed by Richard Tipperman,
MD, Bala Cynwyd, Pa., Michael
Jones, MD, Belleville, Ill., Lisa
Cibik, MD, Pittsburgh, and
Richard Mackool, MD, Astoria, N.Y.
Panelists were Philippe Crozafon,
MD, Nice, France, Robert
Lehmann, MD, Nacogdoches,
Texas, Robert H. Osher, MD,
Cincinnati, RJ Mackool, MD,
Astoria, N.Y., and Stephen Slade,
MD, Houston.
The onsite panelists commented
on how Alcon's technology has
helped to make cataract surgery
more precise, safer, and has height-
ened consumer interest in advanced
technology IOLs.
"The pressure control allows the
surgeon to adapt the Centurion to
his technique," said Dr. Lehmann.
Technology such as the Verion
has allowed for more accurate toric
IOL alignment, Dr. Osher said.
The presentations at "Live
Cataract Surgery" show how the
advent of refractive cataract surgery
has come into its own, surgeons
said. "What you're seeing now is
what we predicted a few years ago,
that we'd all become refractive
cataract surgeons," Dr. Osher said.
"With the technology, we're now
achieving that vision."
Although access to femtosecond
cataract technology is not yet
widespread, Dr. Richard Mackool
