EW T wo preeminent ophthalmic educator/leaders will be inducted into the Oph- thalmology Hall of Fame at today's ASCRS Opening General Session. Frederick C. Blodi, MD (1917–1996) The namesake of the FC Blodi Eye Pathology Laboratory at the Univer- sity of Iowa's Department of Pathol- ogy, Dr. Blodi died on October 30, 1996, while the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting was being held in Chicago. He was a recognized expert in ophthalmic pa- thology, a skilled diagnostician, and an accomplished surgeon. Dr. Blodi was best known for his teaching skills—from medical book editing to thoughtful lecturing. During his time with the University of Iowa's Department of Ophthalmology, more than 160 resi- dents and 120 fellows were trained— with a notable amount deciding to work in academia. The then-head of the University of Iowa's Department of Ophthalmology, Alson E. Braley, MD, invited Dr. Blodi to the uni- versity in 1952. Dr. Blodi began his career with the University of Iowa's Department of Ophthalmology as an assistant professor in 1952 and was named department head in 1967. A colleague, H. Stanley Thompson, MD, said, "During the years of Dr. Blodi's leadership (1967–1984), the [University of Iowa] Department of Ophthalmolo- gy's reputation was enhanced as one of the very best places in the world to learn ophthalmology." Dr. Blodi received his doctor- ate from the University of Vienna School of Medicine in 1940. Born in Vienna, he served internships and residencies in pathology and oph- thalmology during World War II. He was imprisoned near the end of the war for activities against the Third Reich and was liberated from prison by Allied troops. After moving to the United States in 1947, Dr. Blodi became a research fellow of the World Health Organization at New York's Institute of Ophthalmology. He explored his interest in ophthalmic pathology and was a student of 2006 ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame hon- oree, the late Algernon B. Reese, MD. Dr. Blodi was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1950. He was the first foreign- trained ophthalmologist to sit on the American Board of Ophthal- mology and served as its chairman in 1975. In addition to being an honorary member of ophthalmic societies throughout the world, Dr. Blodi served as the Association of University Professors of Ophthal- mology president in 1982 and AAO president in 1979. In 1980, while serving as chief editor of the Archives of Ophthalmol- ogy, he received the Lucien Howe Medal of the American Ophthalmo- logical Society. Gunter K. von Noorden, MD Dr. von Noorden has been one of the preeminent leaders in ophthal- mology and strabismus surgery for the past 40 years. Most recently, in 2010, he retired as distinguished emeritus professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. Dr. von Noorden began his career as a resident at the University of Iowa in 1957, which was followed by a fellowship at the University of Tuebingen Eye Clinic in Germany. He then returned to the University of Iowa, spending 2 years as an as- sistant professor of ophthalmology. In 1963, Dr. von Noorden became a professor at the Wilmer Eye Insti- tute at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. In 1972, he moved to Houston to serve as a professor and director of the ocular motility service at Baylor College of Medicine. Born in Germany in 1928, Dr. von Noorden's family moved to Berlin in 1937. This had a profound impact on his life, exposing him to Adolf Hitler's dictatorship and Nazi propaganda. Following his involve- ment in the Battle of Berlin in 1945 and the end of World War II, Dr. von Noorden was determined to dedicate his life to healing others and worked his way through medical school at the Johann-Wolfgang Goethe University. Dr. von Noorden is charter member and former president of the American Association of Pe- diatric Ophthalmology (AAPOS), the International Strabismological Association (ISA), and the American Orthoptic Council (AOC).
