ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress, San Diego 2015
There are sessions for all levels
of surgeons, including beginners,
experienced, or those who need a
refresher, Dr. Henderson said.
This year's addition of femto-
second laser cataract surgery will be
an intensive, 90-minute, hands-on
introduction to the 4 dominant
cataract laser platforms in the U.S.,
said Skills Transfer Subcommittee
member Kevin Miller, MD, chief of
the cataract and refractive surgery
division, David Geffen School of
Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles.
"Course attendees will have the
opportunity to dock a model eye,
image the eye, and fire each laser.
Experts from industry and experi-

will staff each work station," Dr.

urgeons can learn a lot
from attending clinical
sessions at meetings, but
it's hard to beat the value
of hands-on practice.
Attendees at the skills trans-
fer sessions get valuable hands-on
practice with surgical techniques.
New for this year, that practice will
include femtosecond laser cataract
surgery.
This year's skills transfer sessions
include:
• Advanced Phaco
• Anterior Vitrectomy
• Limbal Relaxing Incisions/Periph-
eral Corneal Relaxing Incisions
• Iris Suture
• Extracapsular Cataract Extraction/
Small Incision Sutureless Cataract
Surgery
• Trabs and Tubes for the Compre-
hensive Ophthalmologist
• Iris Prosthesis
• Femtosecond Laser Cataract

"The skills transfer labs are often
some of the most popular activities
at the ASCRS annual meeting,"
said Bonnie An Henderson, MD,
Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston,
and clinical professor of ophthal-
mology, Tufts University, Boston.
Dr. Henderson is chair of the Skills
Transfer Subcommittee. "It is the
perfect place to learn a new skill or
brush up on an old one. The faculty
for the labs are handpicked by the
lead instructor for not only their
surgical skills but also for their
teaching ability."
time for those sitting on the side-
lines to take a practical look at the
technology."
In addition to the course in-
structors, each course will feature
a number of faculty who can help
students as they practice the various
surgical techniques that they have
learned.
Each skills transfer session
requires a separate registration fee of
$320. Some of the skills transfer ses-
sions have prerequisite courses. See
the meeting Final Program or search
the ASCRS meeting website for more
